The federal government released its Record of Decision last week, outlining a new operating agreement for the Colorado River, which will take effect January 1, 2027.

Under the agreement, Arizona’s Colorado River water supply will be reduced by approximately 30%. For now, this avoids the more harmful decision of cutting water entirely to the Central Arizona Project, which delivers much of the water to the Phoenix and Tucson areas.

The agreement also requires California and Nevada to take reductions, sharing the burden among the Lower Basin states. The Upper Basin states will not face mandatory reductions under the new framework.

The agreement establishes a 10-year framework which will be amended every two years based on river conditions. That leaves the door open for Arizona to face even greater reductions beginning in 2029 if conditions on the Colorado River worsen.

This weekend Waaso set a course record, had one bogey in 72 holes and captured the first Kachina Trophy of his career.
