men's basketball head coach Cory Hoff has announced the 2026-27 recruiting class for the Cougar program. As Hoff and his staff enter year two at South Mountain Community College, they have put together a roster of eight returners and 10 freshmen.

The eight returners for the Cougar program are redshirt sophomore guard Blake Carabio (Peoria, AZ/Ironwood), sophomore wing Dylan Eaddy (Atlanta, GA/Imagine Prep), redshirt sophomore wing Semajay James (Inglewood, CA/Deer Valley), sophomore wing Jadden Jones (Glendale, AZ/Ironwood), sophomore forward Gak Kueth (Peoria, AZ/Kellis), sophomore wing Devone Pless (Chandler, AZ/AZ Compass Prep), redshirt sophomore point guard Travis Vasquez (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley) and sophomore point guard I'yar Shadowvine (Tacoma, WA/Ironwood).

The new freshman joining the Cougar program are wing Keegan Colter (Glendale, AZ/Liberty), guard Rinor Gerbiqi (Phoenix, AZ/North Canyon), point guard Sergio Gonzales (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley), point guard Simon Gonzales (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley), wing Jaelen Green (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert), forward Santiago Leyva (El Mirage, AZ/Dysart), wing Paxton Tamlyn (Chandler, AZ/Valley Christian), guard Sekou Sackor (Phoenix, AZ/Centennial), wing Roberto Ohton (Chicago, IL/Ironwood) and point guard Nico Velez (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista).

men's golf sophomore Quinton Breuer, a 2026 NJCAA Second Team All-American, finished fourth at -11 (273) at the 41st Arizona Stroke Play Championship from Aug. 20-23 at Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club in Wickenburg, Ariz. The women's volleyball team (0-1) lost 3-2 to Benedictine-Mesa (JV) in a non-conference match on Friday, Aug. 21, at the SMCC Gym. Freshman Sophia Guzman recorded a double-double in her SMCC debut, finishing with a team-high 18 kills to go with 14 digs. Sophomore Parker Escalante of the men's basketball team will transfer to Stanton University, an NAIA program in Anaheim, Calif. The Softball Team and head coach Kelley Montalvo announced the Cougars' four-year transfers from the 2026 roster. Kylee McGee has joined the South Mountain Community College women's golf program as an assistant coach, SMCC head coach Marcus Smith announced. Sophomore Keira Allen of the South Mountain Community College women's volleyball team has been named the Chick-Fil-A South Mountain Student of the Month for August. Allen, a libero/defensive specialist for the Cougars, returns to help lead SMCC in 2026 after she earned First Team Academic All-NJCAA honors for her work in the classroom during the 2025-26 academic year.

"Thank you to Chick-Fil-A for the award and recognition. I spent most of my summer playing volleyball and, when I wasn't practicing, I was working at the Chick-Fil-A by my house. I have worked there for more than two years," Allen said. "This summer my family went to Universal Studios in California for my birthday, and my boyfriend and I went up to Pine, Ariz., and did a cute cabin vacation."

In the classroom, Allen was one of 12 SMCC student-athletes to post a perfect 4.0 GPA for the 2025-26 academic calendar. She will receive her AA Degree in Biology this upcoming spring, and she plans to pursue a career in veterinary sciences.

The Baseball Team announced its four-year transfers from its 2026 team. A large contingent of this group helped the Cougars win back-to-back NJCAA DII Region I and West District Championships, and led the Cougars to consecutive appearances in the NJCAA DII World Series. Most recently, this group helped SMCC reach the National Championship Game at the 2026 NJCAA DII World Series while leading all NJCAA Division II teams in wins (52), ERA (4.43), and WHIP (1.41).
