Sometimes grief waits.
All day I served. All day I stood strong. All day I encouraged others.
But at 11:28 p.m., my tears finally found their way to the surface as the reality of the passing of Bishop Raymond Walker settled into my heart.
Those who serve others often carry their own sorrow in silence. Tonight, I simply allowed myself to grieve.
Thank you, Bishop Walker, for your life, your leadership, and the impact you made on so many of us. Your legacy will continue to live through the lives you touched.
“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4
Rest well, Bishop. You will be deeply missed.

There’s another kind of grief that comes with losing someone we love.

It’s the grief of no longer being needed.

For many people, especially spouses who spent months or years caregiving, life became organized around another person's needs.

Medications had to be given. Appointments had to be scheduled. Meals had to be prepared. There were doctors to call, forms to fill out, and countless little things that nobody else even noticed.

The days were exhausting…but they were also filled with purpose.

Then suddenly, one day, it all stops.

The calendar that was once packed with appointments becomes empty. The phone stops ringing. There’s no one asking for help getting out of bed, no medications waiting on the counter, no next appointment. The responsibilities that once consumed every waking hour just disappear.

At first, that might sound like relief. After all, caregiving can be physically, emotionally, and mentally draining. But what many of us caregivers discover is that when the caregiving ends, we don't just lose the person we were caring for, we also lose the role that had come to define us.

I was a caregiver for my spouse and for a long time my purpose was clear. I knew exactly where I needed to be and what needed to be done. Every day had structure because someone was depending on me. Then grief came along and took away both the person I love and my purpose at the same time.

Here’s the thing…that can leave behind a weird emptiness.

I woke up the next day and realized nobody needed anything from me. There was nothing and no one counting on me to show up. In some ways, it felt like I was forced to retire from the most important job I ever had.

And sometimes us caregivers feel guilty for missing that role. Because people think we should be grateful the stress is over. But we don’t miss the burden. We miss the meaning.

Being needed is a powerful thing. It gives us a sense of purpose. It reminds us that we matter. When that disappears, it can leave us wondering who we are now.

I think this is one of the reasons grief can feel so disorienting after caregiving. You're not just learning how to live without the person you love.

You're learning how to live without the version of yourself that existed alongside them.

As Father’s Day comes I recognize that today is not easy for everyone.
Some are celebrating. Some are remembering. Some are grieving. Some are longing for what never was.
Wherever you find yourself today, may God give you peace, comfort, and strength.
Your feelings matter. Your tears matter. And you are not alone.
