Northern Liberties Run Club

Ten turned thirty five on Thursday, and Philly showed up for it. 🎸

We ran to Future Days Beer Company for their Ode to Pearl Jam and walked into a room that was already going. A PEARL JAM 10 banner hanging from the rafters. Setlists from every Philly show they ever played, papered across the back wall. Nothing but PJ on the speakers. And Tattooed Everything pouring, the Black IPA they brewed for the night, named straight out of the lyrics to Black.

A brewery named after a Pearl Jam song throwing a party for a Pearl Jam record. Of course it went off.

Thank you to Future Days for kicking ten percent of the day to the Vitalogy Foundation, and for being cool about a crowd of sweaty runners rolling into the middle of it. 🍻

Now the part we didn’t want to write.

Thursday was the last run for AG and Clarissa Grinham, who move to Virginia on Tuesday.

They joined a little over a year ago and were instantly ours. It genuinely feels like they’ve been in this club far longer than that. They will be missed, a lot.

Doors are always open, you two. ❤️

A week late on this one, which honestly feels right for a night nobody wanted to end. 😅

Last Thursday we ran to Source Urban Brewery for the last time ever. Five years on Frankford Ave. Thirty two taps. A smash burger that outlived every excuse we ever made about mileage. And a room that never once blinked when a crowd of sweaty runners came through the door.

They posted their own goodbye that same night, and the comments underneath it said everything. Fishtown showed up for them the way they always showed up for us.

So we ran there, we raised one, we told stories, we stayed too long. That is the correct way to do it. 🍻

TONIGHT we’re at Other Half Brewing Philly. 6:30, water tower, you know the drill.

NEXT THURSDAY we run to Future Days Beer Company for their Ode to Pearl Jam. Thirty five years to the day since Ten came out.

That is what this club raised for the Katie Kirlin Fund this Mayor’s Cup season, and last night at the Second Street Irish Society is where it all came home. $714 more added to the pile, most of it straight out of that raffle bin.

The Katie Kirlin Fund supports youth wheelchair sports across Philadelphia, anchored by Katie’s Komets, the city’s coed junior wheelchair basketball team, covering their training, equipment, and travel. That is what this number turns into.

Second Street Irish Society, thank you. Four years now you have opened your doors to us, and last night your own members came out and stood in the room with us. That is not a venue. That is a partner.

And to everyone who filled that prize table: Urban Village Brewing Company, Punch Buggy Brewing Company, Future Days Beer Company, Sacred Vice Brewing Company, Sacred Vice Brewing - Berks, and Brewery in Philly. Small businesses who said yes to a cause we walked in and told them about. Give them your money, they earned it. And Nick Piscitelli, who built three prizes on his own and then watched people walk out grinning with them.

Now the fun part. TOMORROW we run the Philadelphia Mayor’s Cup at Belmont Plateau. Every mile out there is backed by everything in this post. Go get it, NLRC. 🍀

Three days out from the Mayor’s Cup, and last night could not have gone better. 🔥

The weather held. The river looked unreal. The out and back went exactly how a First Tuesday should go, and Urban Village Brewing Company kept Happy Hour open for the whole crew when we got back.

THREE new runners showed up. Three people who had never run with us before walked up to the water tower, ran with us, and stuck around after.

Then Urban Village handed us a shirt, a $40 gift card, two glasses, and a pile of stickers for tomorrow’s raffle. Swipe to see it.

TOMORROW, Thursday August 6: the 4th Annual Katie Kirlin Fund Fundraiser at the Second Street Irish Society. Run leaves the old water tower at 6:30, Society at 7. $10 at the door with your first raffle ticket included, $1 per beer to the fund, a 50/50, and a raffle full of Philly brewery and bar goods. CASH ONLY, MAC machine on site. Around 92 degrees, so hydrate hard and take the shorter route if that is what the night calls for. No judgment, ever.
