Hello Again (https://youtu.be/5O6KDuKJoB0?si=VEs_eAnunqEAYNl-) September

“Longevity cannot tell us whether something is healthy, just as an ending does not automatically mean it failed. Sometimes ending it is the healthiest thing that ever happened.”

I recently read a beautiful piece written by writer and storyteller Alex Elle (Read Here (https://substack.com//note/p-213094727?utm_source=notes-share-action&r=ka5gu) ), who reflected on the quiet, agonizing, and ultimately liberating process of women choosing something different for themselves. While she was reflecting largely on relationships, the core truth of her words stopped me in my tracks: “We have a dangerous habit of applauding endurance for endurance’s sake. We mistake our ability to tolerate suffering, self-abandonment, and institutional neglect as proof of our loyalty.”

People always notice the day you finally leave. What they don’t see are the years of internal bargaining that came before it.

Wednesday's with Brandy ~ Starting September 2, 2026 at 5:30pm
Come for the YOGA, stay for the meditation.

From the day I met Brandy, I felt in my gut that she would add something magical to our community. Sitting in her meditation classes made trusting her an easy choice. As a studio owner, letting go of the reins can feel terrifying; your natural instinct is to control every moving part and carry the whole load. Yet real sustainability comes from knowing you don't have to do it alone. It takes an incredible team to hold this space, and I am endlessly grateful to have the very best one by my side.

With my personal life shifting in the moment to be with my daughter and her new babies (yes two), I've had to make some changes. I'm excited to share that Brandy will be leading 5:30pm YOGA on Wednesday's going forward. I hope to sub and continue to make my way back to teaching as time permits. For now - you are in for a treat.

See Brandy's post HERE (https://www.instagram.com/brandygilbreth?igsi=Y3oycXlpdXpiYWNt) . Join her starting September 2, 2026 at 5:30. She will lead an all level yoga followed by a guided meditation starting at 6:30.

Mid - August

The Beach or Forbes Magazine?

"Half of me wants to disappear to a little house by the ocean and read books. The other half would like to be on the cover of Forbes. They meet every morning for coffee."

This quote couldn't describe me better. Now imagine being inside my head!

For as long as I can remember I've never been able to strike a good work/rest balance. Driven from the time I was old enough to operate the waffle maker on the buffet line at Verucchi's, I've only known one mode - WORK HARD.

It's probably why I wrestled so intensely with the decision to retire this summer. Yes, NEWS FLASH, I retired. (You can read more about that in my Substack essay, The Myths of Retirement, According to me, linked [HERE] (https://amyperona.substack.com/p/the-myths-of-retirement?r=ka5gu) ).

Fast forward to mid-August, and I'm practically wanting to take Benadryl to take away the itch to have a ridgid plan. Surely I can't just sit back and watch my plants grow, we all know a watched bloomer never blooms. This isn't to say I'm itching to get a classroom ready, or longing to receive that annual robotic "Welcome back, it's going to be a great year," email. It's just ..... weird. It's not at all what I envisioned.

Next Steps?

I have no idea, but I do know that I need to get out of my own way and I desperately need to get back on my yoga mat.

My body feels broken, and my meditation practice is being tested. I have a stack of books I want to dive into, journals filled with short anectodal notes but nothing of substance yet, and two new grandchildren I desperately want to pour all my love into. The challenge for me is that all of those good things feel strangely disconnected from the work I left behind - the broken educational system, the politics, and the district optics that I simply can't unsee or forgive.

This is where the REAL practice starts for me. The process of letting go is something I've always struggled with, but it's where I have to lean in. Removed from my daily routine, in a body that hasn't fully healed from a very hard school year, I find myself wrapped in heavy emotions.

And yet, I'm reminded that yoga isn't about having it all figured out. It's about sitting with the discomfort of the transition until the dust settles.

Favorite Things

In the quiet pockets between feeding babies, hospital visits, and trying to let my mind settle, these are the books, podcasts, and practices that have been keeping me anchored, entertained, and inspired the last few months:

All There Is Podcast with Anderson Cooper (https://www.youtube.com/live/fgCF13RZoG4?si=aLEOPkIie58KrDGt)

Grief is real. I'm learning well past the death of my father its lifetime impact. No matter how much time passes, something always reminds of him. The birth of my children, their rights of passage, and now the birth of his great-grandchildren. I miss him more today than I ever have. This podcast reminds me that I'm not alone, and there is no shame is wanting to keep someones memory alive.

Book Stack
My preference is a hard cover book, a walk through the bookstore to pick it out (preferrably a small owned store tucked away somewhere), multiple books at a time, coffee, and a sweet treat.

Documentary: Travis Barker, Louder Than Fear
I just finished this documentary, and it stayed with me for days. It completely reinforced the old truth that you can never judge a book by its cover. The media presents one version of a person, but behind the tattoos and the noise is a remarkable story of quiet grit, deep faith, and breathtaking resilience after surviving the impossible. Somewhere in the middle of July......

Middle of July…

Somewhere between the sound of beeping machines measuring Emma’s heart rate and contractions, we welcomed Luisa Barbara and Leonardo (Leo) James. I was fortunate enough to be in the delivery room on June 24th. At 12:07 p.m. the first arrived, and by 12:10 p.m. they were both here. And yes, we anxiously waited for those first cries.

Now it’s July 20th, and the sound of beeping machines is still present as we watch Luisa heal after having heart surgery at just six days old. Her brother, Leo, has been cheering her on from the sidelines and taking notes at home to share with her when she gets there.

Just yesterday, Leo, his grandpa, and I were invited to a World Cup Final party right inside Luisa’s CCU room. For a few minutes, the twins put on matching jerseys, and for a long time afterward, they napped together in their mom's arms. There were two babies! We laughed because, obviously, we know there are two, but seeing them together made it real and even more beautiful. Luisa and Co. were cheering for Argentina, while her Uncle Jimmy was rooting for Spain (or at least, that’s who he picked in the family draw). But honestly, we’re all just rooting for Luisa—our heart-strong warrior who continues to impress us every day with her strength and resilience.

That’s been my life for the last month. It’s been a bit blurry, hard, beautiful, sad, and joyful all at the same time. It is a constant reminder that the difficult and the beautiful can—and will—co-exist. We have to work through both if we want to be fully present for this one wild, beautiful life we get to live.

Yoga Studio Updates

First I must take a moment to recognize the women who've held space for me this past month at TANA Yoga! Thank you hardly seems like enough. Teresa, Joanne, Brandy, Dani, Trish and Gillian - WOW!!! I appreciate each of you so much and I know our little yoga community does as well. You've covered classes, picked up my classes, supported each other, taught through some VERY warm days and never hesitated once. BRAVO and BIG HUGS.

Upcoming Class Reminders
1. Friday Mat Pilates with Gillian ends August 7th - watch for updates regarding future Friday classes, and more Mat Pilates with Gillian.
2. Meditation with Brandy is staying on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm following our 5:30 pm All Level Vinyasa Yoga class. Come for the yoga, stay for the meditation. It's a great way to start building a meditation practice.
3. THE HEAT - I know it's been HOT in the studio, especially for those of you practicing in the evening. Our little snowglobe in the winter turns into a greenhouse in the summer. No matter how hard I try to lower the thermostat, it simply can't compete when the temperatures are in the high 90s. My recommendation: dress appropriately, bring extra water, a cold washcloth, and adjust your practice. We will do our best on our end to ensure you are safe and the classes reflect the room's temperature. Soon enough, we'll be bundled up in our wool socks again.
4. September is an exciting month for Dani! She is getting married, and we can't wait to see the gorgeous photos from her day. Wedding planning has kept Dani super busy, but I know her and Brandy will be back this fall and winter with more Full Moon yoga events. Keep watching for updates.

This & That: Things I'm gravitating to lately

This summer, I decided to dig deep—literally. As if I didn’t have enough going on, I took on the overly ambitious project of planting a garden and clearing space for new perennials. Honestly, the physical intensity was a lifesaver; it helped me decompress after a grueling professional year. Every day at 3:30, I’d leave work, grab a shovel, and dig. It was equal parts satisfying and horrifying once I realized what I'd gotten myself into, especially with Emma’s due date fast approaching.

I miraculously finished just in time, but keeping a new garden alive while staying at the hospital has become its own comedy of errors. To keep my sanity, I sneak home every seven days (give or take) to water the plants and squeeze my kitties. The rest of the time? I’m distracting myself by reading, journaling, and listening to podcasts. Here are a few of my favorite things.

"If you want a happy ending, it depends on where you stop your story." (Orson Welles)If you had told me in my early 30s ...

"If you want a happy ending, it depends on where you stop your story." (Orson Welles)

If you had told me in my early 30s that I would step away from a massive piece of my identity, I would have told you absolutely NOT! Yet, here I am, and truthfully, I don't know if I'm ready. But then, do we ever really know when it's time to STOP? Summer Schedule Reminders

Tuesdays with Trish 4:30 pm
Summer is such a busy time of the year, but also a time when everyone wants to make the most of those sunlit evening hours. Join Trish on Tuesdays this summer at 4:30 pm (60 minutes). New time, same GREAT class.

Wednesdays with Amy and Brandy (Yoga 5:30 pm) (Guided Meditation 6:35) ~ Come for the Yoga, Stay for the Meditation
Quick story - many years ago, I would take a class at Yogaview in Chicago during my summer break at noon. It felt like such a luxury to practice in the middle of the day. Little did I know that this class was tied to a guided meditation offering. Up until this point, meditation was separate from my physical practice, something done in isolation or removed from asana. On this day, after a physical practice, to my surprise, meditation was perfectly placed, and my body received it in a way it hadn't before. Difficult, of course, to explain this feeling, but NOW you can experience it at TANA Yoga on Wednesday evenings.

Fridays with Gillian 9:00 am
We are thrilled to announce our summer schedule at TANA Yoga Studio! Join us on Mondays and Wednesdays with Joanne for all-level yoga classes, and don’t miss out on Mat Pilates with Gillian every Friday. It’s the perfect way to enhance your summer wellness routine. We can't wait to see you at TANA Yoga Studio!

The Light That Remains: Wintering, Glitter, and the 21-Year Cliff

I have been loving the moments of warm sunshine lately. It tells me we are shifting from winter into spring - a transition that always makes me a little anxious. After the long, quiet interior work of "wintering" in our meditation practice this year, the spring sun arrives and tells me I have to wake up. It asks me to come out of those dark protective moments of winter that allow me to hunker down and hide.

This winter cracked open a stored kind of grief. Not just the type we associate with death, but the grief that comes with leaving something behind, or the terrifying act of letting go. It wasn't until the temperature hit 70 degrees recently that I realized how heavy I was feeling. So, I sat with it. I sat with my journal entries, the podcasts I was gravitating to, and the hardest part of all - my inner voice that only speaks when I stay still long enough to hear it.

My father died 43 years ago. Even after four decades, this month finds me missing him with a sharpness that defies the passage of time. I read somewhere: "The sun shifts forever, and we simply learn to walk in the light that remains." Through this lens, grief is like GLITTER.

You can read the rest of my post HERE (https://substack.com//note/c-236537640?r=ka5gu&utm_source=notes-share-action&utm_medium=web) .

(big hugs) and LOTS of GLITTER xo

Happy New Year

Happy 2026 everyone! This note is reaching you a little later than planned, mostly because I've been sitting with a theme that I'm personally navigating this year. The Shift.

In the spirit of that shift, I'm changing how I share my personal reflections. While this newsletter will stay focused on the heartbeat of TANA Yoga - our classes and community events - I've moved my deeper ramblings to a new platform. This gives you the space to choose how you engage with my personal stories. If you'd like to read my full January message on overthinking and moving forward, you can find it here (https://amyperona.substack.com/p/the-deferred-life-hypothesis) .

Thank you for an incredible 2025. If the start of 2026 is what's to come for TANA Yoga and the amazing instructors, this is sure to be our best year yet.

• Gain tools you can carry with you throughout the season

No prior knowledge of Ayurveda is needed; all teachings will be accessible and grounded in everyday life. Spring is a season of renewal. This workshop offers a supportive space to slow down, learn, and reconnect with your body’s natural rhythms as you step into this new season.

Price Changes Effective February 1, 2026

To continue providing the high-quality environment, equipment, and expert instruction that our community deserves, I’m implementing a modest increase effective February 1st, 2026. As the costs of studio maintenance, equipment, and general operations have risen, this adjustment ensures TANA remains a sustainable and thriving space for all of us to practice and grow.

All Membership Packages: $5 increase.
Walk-in/Single Class Rate: $15

Why this matters: In my practice, I’ve learned that “anything that pulls you is worth pursuing.” I am deeply pulled to keep TANA a premium space for you to practice, rest and grow. This change allows me to maintain the standard without compromise.

Thank you for your trust, and for showing up for yourself on the mat.

With gratitude,
Amy Perona, Owner

All monthly members will receive an email within the next few days detailing these changes and the steps for a smooth transition.

TANA Crewneck Sweatshirts

If you'd like to pre-order a TANA crewneck email: [email protected] include your name, size, and color preference (brown or sage green). Once I've received your order I will send a confirmation.
