East Meets West was an incredible event.
Despite the Fourth of July holiday, members of the Pasadena Casting Club community and the public still came out to experience a cultural exchange between Japan and the United States centered around bamboo rod building and fly fishing.
As PCC host Dorothy Dai put it:
“When (Nobuyuki) and Yudai Mochizuki (Yudai), respectively from Nagoya and Hokkaido, Japan, asked me if I knew a place where they could meet a lot of fly fishers in Los Angeles, Pasadena Casting Club felt like the perfect home.
And sure enough, there were plenty of highlights.
Yudai explained his bamboo rod-building craft, Nobuyuki showed off Scott rods that were released exclusively in Japan, PCC member Darrell Kunitomi shared his bamboo rod from the 1920s, longtime member Chris Capune admired Yudai’s 4-weight bamboo rods, member Artin Marootian examined the different types of fly tying scissors from Nobuyuki, and recent PCC member Wendy Lau couldn’t stop casting one of Yudai’s creations.
Seeing moments like these made all the effort worthwhile.
A huge thank you to Keiko from Tortoise General Store for hosting and coordinating our two guests, Loring Greene for helping with setup, and the PCC board and members for their support.
After today’s success, we’re already talking about doing this event again next year.”
Thank you to everyone who came out and made East Meets West such a memorable day.

It was a busy and exciting day at Pasadena Casting Club!
Last Tuesday, we welcomed 45 campers and counselors from the City of Pasadena Parks & Recreation Department’s youth camp to our clubhouse and casting pond. The kids enjoyed a fun morning of fly-fishing themed coloring, learning the basics of casting, and spending time outdoors.
As if that wasn’t enough excitement, another youth camp arrived with canoes, making it a full house on the pond and creating an unforgettable day of outdoor recreation.
Thank you to the City of Pasadena Parks & Recreation Department, our volunteers, and everyone who helped introduce the next generation to the joy of casting and being on the water.
We love seeing our clubhouse filled with smiles, laughter, and future anglers!
