Dottie is a beautiful 15-year-old National Show Horse (NSH) mare with a heavy past, but she is officially taking her first big steps toward a bright future. Standing a solid 15 hands tall, this Arabian/Saddlebred cross is an incredibly sweet soul who is currently in training with our team.
Dottie’s journey to our ranch began with a heartbreak. She was pulled out of a local auction by our rescue after being brought there by her breeder and owner, Donna Knight. The entire auction environment was deeply terrifying for her, and she arrived at Love This Horse Equine Rescue quite traumatized by the experience. It has taken time, consistency, and a calm paddock environment to help her let her guard down and learn to trust humans again.
When it comes to her education, Dottie is what we would call “super green broke.” While she accepts a saddle and a rider without a fuss, she didn’t know much of anything beyond that. She has the basic exposure, but lacks the formal knowledge. Our trainers are actively working with her now, slowly adding to her riding vocabulary, building her confidence, and helping her understand how to carry herself smoothly under saddle.
Despite her greenness, Dottie has an exceptional temperament. She is a total sweetheart on the ground and does absolutely beautifully out in a herd setting with other horses. We are confident that once we put some more miles and training on her, she will make an incredible partner for the right person.
We are giving her all the time and elbow grease she needs to heal from her past and finish her education. Step by step, she is proving that a second chance can completely change a horse’s life.
