Power + Speed Strength

Here's a throwback to a few years ago working with Jake Brutal Bostwick showcasing a true dynamic effort day.

Using multidirectional plyometrics, loaded eccentric RFD split stance jumps, finishing with banded b-stance trap bar deadlifts.

Moving from high velocity to medium velocity improving the ability to redirect force, control body positioning, rate of force, and power endurance.

This would be a phase 2 in camp training sequence peaking for the fight. Training with specific loading, volume, and frequency to reduce the risk of injury due to insufficient internal / external loading structure and providing enough stimulus to allow for him to use inside his skills training.

Back to work Jake Brutal Bostwick

Pre-camp assessment and strength capacity building for Brutal getting set to step back in the cage for the first time in over 6 years.

Spending the majority of the past 6 years boxing with BKFC now steps into full MMA with GAMEBRED BAREKNUCKLE MMA

Here we are simply working on lengthened yielding isometric holds in positions that will transfer to the cage. Using these isometrics in a longer hold will drive mobility, tendon strength, and muscle endurance.

How to build training around stress, recovery, movement, and the athlete

Read on 👉

FOUR FRAMEWORKS, ONE PROGRAM

Every program is built around four things: stress, fatigue, movement demands, and the individual athlete. Understand how they interact and programming becomes a process not guesswork.

GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME

Training disrupts homeostasis 👉 recovery allows adaptation 👉 capacity improves. Push stress beyond recovery capacity for too long and adaptation becomes exhaustion.

FITNESS-FATIGUE MODEL

Every training session simultaneously builds fitness and creates fatigue. Performance improves when fitness is retained while fatigue is properly managed.

CONDENSED CONJUGATE METHOD

For combat athletes, I condense conjugate training into fewer sessions built around the demands of the sport. Skill stays the priority while max effort, dynamic work, and repeated effort are adjusted to the athlete’s recovery capacity.

PROGRAMMING FROM DAILY READINESS

Combine subjective markers like sleep, soreness, stress, and motivation with objective markers like HRV, velocity, jump performance, and resting HR. Don’t react to one number just adjust training based on the overall trend.

STRESS ACCUMULATION & LOAD MANAGEMENT

Training load should progress only as fast as the athlete can adapt and recover. Planned reductions in volume help dissipate accumulated fatigue so the next loading phase can actually produce progress.

INDICATORS OF READINESS

Using both subjective and objective markers of fatigue and create a better understanding of overall readiness.

Agility-Speed-Power 😤

Here's some drills for improving quickness, rate of force and rotational power. Jake Brutal Bostwick showcasing athletic ability and body awareness with the movements.

Looking forward to getting back into camp soon as he makes his way back to the cage.👊🏼

Take action😤

Biggest problem I see with keeping people active is that they start getting board, stop being challenged, and never fully adopt the passion for growth.

I urge you to constantly seek new ways to keep getting after it. Get with a training partner, take up a skill, get into martial arts, join a sports league, sign up for a competition. Most importantly never stop wanting to learn and evolve.

Explosive Power Training😤

Working with NFL safety getting ready to head back to camp using a combo of speed strength and explosive power.

A1) Trap-bar vertical jump shrug
A2) Medicine horizontal jump throw

Rest around 30-45 seconds just enough to still maintain power. This in turn will help to improve fast twitch endurance and increase mitochondrial density. Essentially building bigger engine to do work with higher force output repeatedly. This is how we implement a form of conditioning for power based athletes.

This is actually what we call strength AND conditioning 🤯

Max Effort 😤

Jake Brutal Bostwick pulling some serious weight using a variation of deadlift we look to utilize to build max force output.

Using rack pull (constraint) at "mini max" with chains to improve posterior chain strength. As an athlete looking to improve their ability to produced force we must move with high intent under high intensity.

With that being said this should only be attempted and worked once the athlete displays a level of skill to do the movement properly under load. Strength is a skill that must be acquired. Any movement at that intensity (% of 1rm) must be efficient in order to execute safely.

Now can an athlete especially a fighter be successful without it?? Well possibly, and I've seen plenty do well of course. Although at a high enough level the margin of era becomes slim, and having the ability to be strong in positions conducive to their sport requirements become favorable.

Let's keep STRENGTH in our S&C..
