On August 19th I posted a photo of Ryan Silverfield with the word “HOPE” above his head. Less than a month later, consider any and all of that “HOPE” sucked out.

I found hope in our first drive of the game. 14 plays, 64 yards, and almost half of the 1st quarter taken off the clock which resulted in three points. After that, it was pretty abysmal in all three phases. Incompetent could be another good word to describe the mauling in Rice-Eccles Stadium.

2.8 yards per carry from our tailbacks. 46% completion percentage from our quarterbacks. Has a football team ever won with those numbers?

In the North Alabama game, I leaned on the defense as something in the game to build off of. I (thought) I saw guys flying around and making plays. Last night gives me nothing to build on. Enter stage left; the Georgia Bulldogs.

I don’t have any hard-hitting analysis or stats tonight. This recap can sometimes be therapeutic for me to write out. Tonight I am a disgruntled Arkansas Razorback fan who is tired of watching this program play football. It also doesn’t help that I am a Green Bay fan fresh off a 4th quarter implosion, but that is neither here nor there.

I’m tired (grandpa). Tired of losing. Tired of giving up 4th quarter leads. Tired of getting blown out. It’s tiring. I started this account in 2014 to be a bit more optimistic during a down time in our program. Now, it is extremely difficult to get optimistic about anything that touches the football program, from the head coach to the administration.

It can’t get any worse, right?

IT’S TIME TO PLAY THE GAME.

For the first time ever - it is Hogs versus Utes.

I can’t sit here and tell you I was captivated by the product on the field last week. I also can’t sit here and tell you truthfully that I think we will win this football game. However, I’ve been wrong before (2021 Texas). Here is the path to a victory:

Our defense has to play lights out. Ben Bogle needs to unlock his inner Luke Keuchly. The offense won’t be able to keep up in a shootout. This has to be a game where we enter the 4th quarter and we look up at the scoreboard and it is 13-10.

Win the turnover battle. Arkansas had three (should have been four) giveaways last week. If we preach “Own The Ball”, let’s try to truly own the ball.

Last time we played in the Mountain Time Zone, we took care of business in Provo. Let’s do it again.

🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
Our friends at Blakeman's Fine Jewelry have decided to step in for a big time partnership. They will sponsor the game for the rest of the season. EVERY person that predicts the score right will be put into a group and ONE person will be randomly chosen to win a $500 gift certificate. Big time.

Arkansas’ win probability according to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI):

18%: @ Utah
8%: Georgia
72%: Tulsa
7%: @ Texas A&M
21%: Tennessee
28%: @ Vanderbilt
33%: Missouri
21%: @ Auburn
21%: South Carolina
2%: @ Texas
8%: LSU

This is as bleak of a “prediction” I have seen from the FPI in quite a long time. Only one game with a win probability above 35% and Tulsa has snuck all the way down to 72% after they smothered Oklahoma State. Woof.

They say teams improve the most from Week 1 to Week 2. Hopefully we see that in Salt Lake City.

. “Own The Ball” was a mantra Coach Silverfield and OC Tim Cramsey taught their players over the offseason. The message was for players to buy in on the importance of taking care of the football. For Hog fans, this was a nice change of pace after the 118th finish in the FBS (out of 136) in giveaways per game last year. Through 1/12th of the season, against a FCS opponent, nonetheless, Arkansas showed they were not capable of 𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 the football. Two lost fumbles, one interception, and another should’ve-been-interception is as poor of a start in that department as you can get.

Eight accepted penalties (at least one was declined), multiple drops, and a lack of ex*****on and/or physicality on the offensive line provided a gloom over this game. It felt a little too similar to the Portland State snoozefest in ‘19.

It is worth mentioning, Week 1 games aren’t always indicative of future success. Eastern Illinois in ‘18 was a 55-point outburst in the inaugural Chad Morris game. Nobody needs a reminder of how that year turned out. On the flip side, Rice had a lead on the Hogs at the half in ‘21 which proved to be the best season since the Petrino era.

On the bright side, the defense looked sharp. Especially in the first half, I saw guys flying around and being physical. Quick shoutout to #44 Ben Bogle for leading the team in tackles and tacking on a nice pass deflection. After giving up 36 points/game last season, I am confident in saying this number will get cut down. Kudos to Ron Roberts and Co. Small sample size, but this unit should keep the Hogs in a lot of games - the inverse of the season prior.

KJ Jackson didn’t have his best day. I wasn’t going to be surprised to see AJ Hill jump into the mix at some point given how “close” the QB competition was this fall. He wasn’t helped much by his OL, but I didn’t see much improvement in his game from what we are accustomed to.

The road doesn’t get easier. Our next foe, Utah, put up 66 points on Idaho. To wrap up the non-con slate, Tulsa smothered Okie State in a game where they were 14-point underdogs. The path to any easy remaining wins is nil.

GAME 1. PREDICTION.

If you’re new here… please read closely. Comment your prediction for today’s game. The winner (tie goes to whoever commented first) will win a $100 gift card; this time to CJ's Butcher Boy Burgers. That’s a lot of burgers. Game preview⬇️

The Silverfield era begins on a steamy afternoon in Fayetteville against North Alabama.

The Lions were also a fellow 2-10 team from a year ago, with their only matchup against an FBS school coming against Western Kentucky in a 55-6 loss.

I am most excited to see KJ Jackson suit up in his second career start (first being against Missouri last year) and building off of his career 64% completion percentage and 3TD/0INT numbers.

I am also eager to see new Special Teams Coordinator, Chad Lunsford, put out a quality product that hasn’t been common in our program in recent memory.

Lastly, go check out College Football Kings for the best content this football season.
