When nitrox was first introduced to the public by the founder of IANTD, Dick Rutkowski, it was labelled a "voodoo gas" and considered unsafe to the extent that nitrox training providers were banned from participating in DEMA for multiple years.

The origins of sidemount date back to the 1960s in the UK, with significant development in the 1970s in Florida. However, this method of diving did not hit the mainstream until the 2010s.

Even the humble alternate air source or "octo" met resistance by instructors before being unanimously accepted into recreational diving.

Innovation in the great sport of scuba is sometimes first met by skepticism. But it takes more than hesitant public acceptance to stop divers innovating in the name of safety, exploration, or both.

Avelo continues the spirit of innovation within our sport by changing the way we manage a fundamental of diving: buoyancy. By developing their Hydrotank with a ballast similar to a submarine, the Avelo System has developed buoyancy with greater stability than a traditional BCD with air volume ever-changing with depth.

While young relative to octos and nitrox, the Avelo System is yet another major innovation in our world of diving. We invite you to join us for the Avelo Tour July 11 & 12 with curiosity, an open mind, or even skepticism. Avelo representatives will be here with detailed info on how the system works, the development and testing procedures involved, and the future vision for the Avelo System.

The Avelo System will be available to rent for any RAD certified divers for $50/day (normally $75/day), and the RAD course is available to all certified divers for $349 (normally $399).
