OJJ ladies putting in work every Sunday.

Why should women train Jiu-Jitsu?

Because knowing a few “self-defense moves” and actually being able to control someone who is bigger, stronger, and actively trying to control you are two very different things.

Jiu-Jitsu gives you something most self-defense training can’t: live rounds against real resistance. You learn how to stay composed when someone grabs you, puts their weight on you, or puts you in a bad position — and how to create space, escape, control, and fight back.

You don’t need prior martial arts experience. You just have to start.

Women’s Jiu-Jitsu every Sunday at 1:30pm at Oswego Jiu Jitsu.

🚨 185 LB BLUE BELT NO-GI SUPER FIGHT 🚨

WILL SIVERS vs. STEVE FELICE

Another blue belt matchup is officially set for the OJJ Invitational.

Representing Haven Jiu-Jitsu in his super fight debut, combat veteran Will Sivers brings plenty of competition experience with 50 Grappling Industries victories, 36 submission finishes, and multiple IBJJF medals. Sivers brings an unorthodox, high-tempo game with heavy pressure.

Across from him is Steve Felice out of Renzo Gracie Warwick, who earned his blue belt under Dave Maver in February 2025 and has put together a strong competition resume of his own:

🥇 Grappling Industries Saratoga — Gi
🥇 Grappling Industries Saratoga — No-Gi
🥈 Grappling Industries Brooklyn
🥇 Grapplers Grand Prix
🥈 Jiu-Jitsu World League

Two experienced competitors. 185 lbs. Blue belt. Submission only.

Will Sivers vs. Steve Felice — October 24th.

Today, I had the honor of promoting Doug Miller to purple belt.

Doug is the gym manager by day, coach by night, competitor on the weekends, and then wakes up and does it all over again.

He helps run our kids program. He coaches MMA, adult fundamentals, wrestling, and takes over regular classes when work pulls me away. And somehow, between all of that, he finds time to compete nearly every month — IBJJF, Grappling Industries, super fights and anything else he can get his hands on.

The progression through jiu jitsu is about more than learning more techniques. You start by learning how to defend yourself and building a foundation. Eventually, you take what you’ve learned and make it your own — developing a game, testing it, finding its weaknesses, making adjustments, and sharing what you’ve learned with the people around you.

That’s been Doug’s blue belt journey.

Now, as a purple belt, the expectation changes again. It’s about building on that game, understanding positions at a higher level, and becoming an even greater resource for the people coming up behind you.

Today, Doug demonstrated exactly that by teaching a half butterfly sweep with an overhook when his knee shield gets smashed. It’s a simple, effective technique that became a staple of his game at blue belt — something he’s tested, refined, and can now pass on to others.

We’ll continue that tradition with future purple belt promotions: share something from your game with the room that helped get you there.

Doug started his jiu jitsu journey at OJJ, and today became our first homegrown purple belt. That’s an incredible milestone for him and for this gym.

Congrats, Doug. You earned every bit of it.

Thank you for everything you do for me and for all of us at OJJ.

🚨 DICKERSON vs. STANDISH 🚨

200 LB BROWN BELT | NO-GI SUBMISSION ONLY

This one is an absolute banger.

JEFF STANDISH | Vien Jiu Jitsu

Jeff’s 2025 IBJJF run at brown belt speaks for itself:

🏆 2025 Pans Champion
🏆 2025 No-Gi Pans Champion
🥉 2025 No-Gi Pans Absolute Bronze Medalist
🥈 2025 No-Gi Worlds Silver Medalist

One of the most accomplished competitors on the card, and he’s coming to Oswego looking to add another win to the list.

ANDRE DICKERSON | Black Hole Jiu Jitsu / Team Takeover

Andre has been around combat sports for more than a decade, with experience in wrestling, MMA, boxing and submission grappling, including competing at the ADCC East Coast Trials.

He’s also the man behind Team Takeover and has a little extra skin in the game for this event.

Andre is making custom no-gi kits for super fight athletes (more to come on this) AND will be on site making OJJ Invitational event shirts.

Apparently that isn’t enough work for one day.

He’s has already shown he’s willing to hunt unconventional finishes, including a win by twister, but across from him will be one of the most decorated brown belts in CNY.

This one could steal the show 🔥

Doug Miller went 2-1 on the day at IBJJF Master Worlds in Vegas.

Doug’s run ended in the quarterfinals in a questionable one. He hit a beautiful takedown (lat drop) near the edge of the mat, but was awarded only an advantage after they went out of bounds.

Regardless of the call, Doug put together a great showing on one of the biggest stages in the sport and once again showed how much his game continues to develop.

Now his sights are set on a handful of super fights and then IBJJF No-Gi Worlds in December.

Next Saturday, we’ll be awarding Doug his purple belt.

The ceremony will take place at 11:15am in lieu of BJJ fundamentals before we roll into open mat at noon.

Come pack the mats and help us welcome Doug to purple belt!

Doug Miller has arrived. Tune in on FloGrappling for his first match on Mat 2 at 4:47pm (ET). 🏅

NEXT MATCHUP: WOOLSON vs. DERBY

210 LB BLUE BELT | NO-GI SUBMISSION ONLY

This one has all the makings of an absolute war. Two relentless, high-paced grapplers who are going to push the action from the jump.

Jake Woolson | Oswego Jiu Jitsu
One of OJJ’s own. Jake is a 2015 NYS Division II Wrestling Champion, 2026 IBJJF Atlanta Open silver medalist, and 2025 Grappling Industries absolute silver medalist. His wrestling pedigree, pressure, and nonstop pace make him a problem for anyone standing across from him.

Cam Derby | Roots Combat Academy
A military veteran who has been competing since 2023, Cam is a blue belt who thrives in fast-paced environments. He brings a fast, violent, technical style and isn’t coming to Oswego to slow things down.

These two are built to clash. Expect heavy wrestling, constant pressure, scrambles, and two guys hunting for the finish.

Woolson vs. Derby. This one is gonna be savage🔥

Congrats to Kris and Jake, who earned their blue belts tonight after standout performances this past Saturday at Grappling Industries Syracuse.

These two are perfect examples of what happens when you actually take advantage of the opportunities in front of you and just train.

Kris has been with us for two years next month. AKA Grandpa 😂 This dude is out here dropping age divisions just to get matches and still finding his way onto the podium against guys 20 years younger than him. He keeps showing up, keeps competing, and keeps getting better.

Jake has become an integral part of what we do at OJJ, including our OPD program. He regularly trains twice a day and will stay for 2–3 classes in a single evening. He’ll work a 12-hour shift and still come straight to the gym and kick ass.

That’s how you accelerate your development.

We offer a lot of classes for a reason. Take advantage of them. Get in the room. Get the extra rounds. Stay for another class. Invest in yourself. Kris and Jake have done exactly that, and you can see the results.

When I asked Jake for some words of wisdom tonight, his answer was basically: just keep showing up and train. No bu****it. No “I’m too tired.”

Pretty damn good advice.

What I love most is that these guys genuinely love to train. They’ve invested a ton into themselves and earned every bit of these blue belts.

Congrats to both of you. Well earned 👏

Now I’m looking forward to watching Grandpa hunt for even more matches at blue belt… and watching Jake continue developing that incredibly annoying guard game 😂

Back to work!
