To all our students!

🥋 The True Meaning of the Dobok and the Ti (Belt)
As martial artists, our uniform is not merely workout attire; it is a vital component of the spiritual aspect of Taekwon-Do.

In the Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do, General Choi Hong Hi explicitly states that the official do bok was designed to retain traditional aspects while representing a new age of heritage and discipline. It serves distinct, profound purposes:

It instills pride as a practitioner of orthodox Taekwon-Do.

It identifies cultural education and degree of skill.

It obliges us to behave accordingly. As the Encyclopedia notes: "When we wear a uniform, we accept a certain role in society and we are obliged to behave accordingly."

The Dobok is a Complete Uniform
Lately, it has become common in the wider martial arts world to see individuals wearing the do bok halfway—treating the sacred uniform like a casual school t-shirt and pants.

The Encyclopedia clearly defines the do bok as a precise, unified structure: a specific shirt (jeogori), pants (baji), and belt (ti). Wearing it improperly undermines the very tradition and social order the uniform is meant to protect. If we treat our uniform like casual sportswear, we reduce our martial art to a casual hobby.

Honoring the Ti (Belt)
Even more concerning is the trend of treating the ti (belt) as a mere piece of training equipment—using it as a jump rope or placing it on the floor to be stepped on.

The belt is steeped in ancient tradition, symbolizing the philosophical core of Taekwon-Do and the wearer’s spiritual journey—from the innocence of white to the maturity and imperviousness to fear of the black belt.

Furthermore, our belt is wrapped around the waist only once. This represents three sacred tenets:

Ohdoilkwan: Pursue one goal whatsoever, once it is determined.

Ilpyondanshim: Serve one master with unshakable loyalty.

Ilkyokpilsung: Gain a victory in one blow.

To drop the belt on the floor, step on it, or use it carelessly directly disrespects these profound philosophical principles. The belt belongs around your waist, representing your dedication, humility, and technical mastery.

To Our Students: Thank You
I want to commend the students of our school. I am incredibly proud that you treat your do bok and your belt with the utmost reverence. You do not cut corners, you do not dress casually on the dojang floor, and you honor the heritage passed down to us.

Let us continue to set the exemplary standard for orthodox Taekwon-Do, showing that true martial artists carry themselves with dignity both in their technique and in how they wear their uniform.

Always a great time when Master Andres Muniz comes to teach! Thank you sir for the self defense class and application.

Advanced self-defense in ITF Taekwondo focuses on practical techniques for defending against a variety of attacks, including grabs, strikes, and weapon threats. Students learn to apply timing, distance, leverage, and controlled force to neutralize threats while creating opportunities to escape safely. Training develops confidence, situational awareness, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Advanced self-defense also emphasizes adaptability, using Taekwondo principles to respond effectively in real-world situations.
