To Break Patterns... You Have to Break Patterns

My wife will tell you
I'm not always the easiest person to watch television with.

Every once in a while, a line catches my attention.

I'll look over and say,
"Can you pause that?"

Sometimes it's...
"Can you rewind that about 15 seconds?"

Not because I missed it.

Because I want to make sure I heard it right.

The other night we were watching the final episode of The Bear.
Sure enough
Jan hit pause.
Again.

I'd heard a line I didn't want to let get away.
"To break patterns, you have to break patterns."

I immediately grabbed my phone, emailed the quote to my school account, and thought,
"I think I just found next week's Thought."

The next morning, coffee in hand, I opened that email...
Read the quote again
And just sat there for a minute.
Then I started thinking

What patterns have become so normal...
That I don't even notice them anymore?

The way I react when I'm frustrated.
The assumptions I make before I have all the facts.
The conversations I put off because they'll be uncomfortable.
The little excuses that somehow keep sounding reasonable.

We all have them.

The interesting thing about patterns is
They don't become powerful because they're right.
They become powerful because they're repeated.

Some patterns serve us well.

Brushing our teeth.
Buckling our seatbelt.
Saying "I love you" before leaving the house.

Others quietly work against us.

Putting things off.
Jumping to conclusions.
Losing our patience.
Choosing comfort over growth.

The scary part is
After enough repetitions...
They all begin to feel normal.
Then one day we look around and wonder why nothing has changed.

Here's the hard truth.
The life we want is often waiting on the other side of a decision that feels uncomfortable.

Confidence may require speaking up.
Health may require getting off the couch.
A stronger relationship may require an honest conversation.
Forgiveness may require letting go of something we've been carrying for years.

The old pattern feels safe.

The new pattern feels awkward.

At least at first.

But here's the good news
Patterns are learned.
Which means they can be unlearned.

And new ones can take their place.

Real change isn't found in knowing better.
It's found in doing differently.

Because
To break patterns... You have to break patterns.

Have a great week, everyone.

Coach Curley

Thought for the Week
Build the Bridge

I've noticed something over the years...
Most people don't have a knowledge problem.

We have an implementation problem.

We know we should exercise.
We know we should save more money.
We know we should put the phone down.

Go to bed earlier.
Call our mom.
Apologize.
Take the walk.
Eat the salad.
Read the book.

The list isn't the problem.

There's a gap most people don't like to talk about.

The gap...between knowing...
and becoming.

Let’s be honest -
Knowledge isn’t the problem.
Most of us already know what works.

We don’t need another podcast.
Another book.
Another YouTube video.

We probably need to put into practice what we learned last Tuesday.

The problem?

We’re standing on one side of the gap…
waiting to feel ready
to Cross it.

Here’s the truth -
Motivation can get you started.
It just can't build the bridge for you.

We close it with structure.
With systems.
With habits.

With small, repeatable actions
that don’t require a pep talk
every time we do them.

That’s the bridge.

And nobody builds it in a day.

We build it one decision at a time.

Every promise we keep to ourselves...
adds another plank.

Every excuse...
leaves another board missing.

That's how the bridge gets stronger.

One moment where we do
what we said we would do -
even when we didn’t feel like it.

That’s how the bridge gets stronger.

And here’s the part we don’t love -
Every time we don’t act,
we reinforce the gap.

We make it easier
to stay where we are.

So let’s stop waiting
to feel different.

Let’s start building something
we can walk across.

Because confidence doesn't come
from knowing more.

It comes from keeping promises
to yourself.

One promise.
One decision.
One plank at a time.

Build the bridge.

Then take the next step.

Thought for the Week
The Stretch Beyond - Happy Anny Janny! #37

I've always loved a line by the poet Robert Browning:
"A man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?"

I've been thinking about that quote this week...
Maybe because my wife and I are celebrating another anniversary.

Or maybe because it's reminded me of one of the greatest lessons life has taught me.

The best things in life usually begin just beyond our comfort zone.

When I first met my wife, I knew I'd outkicked my coverage.

She was smart.
Kind.
Compassionate.
And, if I'm being honest...
a little out of my league.

If I had relied on charm or athletic talent alone...
I probably wouldn't be writing this today.

So I did the only thing I knew how to do.

I showed up.
I paid attention.
I put in the work.

Not just to win her heart...
but to become the kind of man who deserved it.

Because here's something coaching has taught me...
Potential might get you noticed.
But character and consistency build trust.

Potential can open a door.
Character is what keeps you in the room.

The same is true in swimming.
In marriage.
In parenting.
In friendships.
In life.

The people who make the biggest difference aren't usually the most gifted.

They're the ones who keep showing up.
Day after day.
Conversation after conversation.
Decision after decision.

When the excitement fades...
they're still there.

That's the stretch.
Not chasing perfection.
But choosing, every day, to become a little better than you were yesterday.

Browning also wrote:
"The best is yet to be."

I love that thought.

Not because it promises an easy future...
but because it reminds us that growth never has to stop.

No matter how many birthdays we've celebrated...
or anniversaries we've shared...
there is always another conversation to have.
Another lesson to learn.
Another reason to be grateful.
Another chance to love someone a little better than we did yesterday.

So this week...
Reach for something just beyond where you are today.

Not because you'll get there overnight.
But because the stretching...
is what changes us.

Coach Curley

Coach’s Corner by Coach Curley
Thought for the Week

It Just Looks That Way from Across the Street

It's hard for me to watch anything anymore...
without grabbing a pen
or opening the Notes app on my phone.

Whether it’s a game on ESPN, a documentary, or some random series my wife and I stumble across on Netflix or HBO, I’m constantly thinking,

“That might make a good Coach's Corner.”

That happened again this week.

A character made an observation that stopped me in my tracks.
"It just looks that way from across the street."

I actually rewound it to hear it again.

Because the more I thought about that line,
the more I realized how often we do exactly that.

We look across the street.

Across the office.
Across the classroom.
Across the pool.
Across social media.

And we convince ourselves that everyone else has it figured out.

They have it all together.
A better job.
Better-behaved kids.
An easier life.
A faster swimmer.
A more successful career.

But that’s the problem with looking from across the street.

Distance smooths the wrinkles.
Hides the cracks.
Edits the story.

We see the highlight reel...
Never the behind-the-scenes footage.
The polished surface,
Not the pressure underneath.

Forty-plus years on the pool deck have taught me...

Sometimes the swimmer who looks the calmest is fighting the biggest battle inside.
The parent who always has a smile may be carrying a burden no one else knows about.
The family that appears to have everything together may be doing everything they can just to hold it together.

The truth is...
We're all carrying something.
Some burdens are just easier to hide.

Some are visible.
Most are not.

That’s why kindness matters.
That’s why encouragement matters.
That’s why giving people the benefit of the doubt matters.

Because we rarely know the whole story.

And here’s something else I’ve learned.
The same illusion works in reverse.

While you’re busy wishing for someone else’s life…
Someone else may be looking at yours and thinking,
“I wish I had what they have.”

So this week,
Trade comparison for compassion.
Trade assumptions for curiosity.
Trade judgment for grace.

Because from across the street...
Life almost always looks simpler than it really is.
It just looks that way.
