One of the greatest privileges of what I do is helping people gain clarity about what's next.
Not by telling them what to do.
By helping them see what they couldn't see before.
I'm grateful to Ed for sharing his experience and allowing others to learn from his journey.

Before I became a Career Ownership Coach®, I was a client.
I didn't quit my job overnight.
I didn't take a leap of faith.
Instead, I spent months learning, asking questions, meeting business owners, and gathering information.
That process gave me something far more valuable than certainty—it gave me clarity.
The lesson?
You don't have to make a commitment to explore possibilities.
You simply need to be willing to learn.

I spoke with a business owner recently who transitioned from engineering, to sales, to business ownership.
He said something that resonated:
"I always knew I could run a business. I just didn't know what business."
I hear that all the time.
Many successful professionals don't lack capability.
They lack exposure.
They've already ruled out options they haven't spent time investigating.
Sometimes the most expensive assumption is believing the only options available are the ones you've already considered.
For the first time, Gen Z is starting more businesses than Baby Boomers.
Gen Z launched 9% of new businesses, compared with just 5% for Boomers (Gusto New Business Formation Report, 2026). And the interest runs deep: 51% of Gen Z have seriously considered starting a business in the past year (LendingTree, 2026).
Very interesting.
For decades, business ownership was often viewed as something you did after building a career.
Now, younger generations increasingly see ownership as one of several career paths available to them from the beginning.
Maybe the question isn't whether business ownership is right for you.
Maybe the question is whether you've given yourself permission to consider all of your options.

Who are you when the title disappears?
For a lot of accomplished professionals, that's the real fear.
Not losing the paycheck.
Not losing the benefits.
Losing the identity.
For years, you were the VP.
The Director.
The Executive.
The Expert.
Then one day, you're just... you.
I've found that the people who navigate career transitions best aren't the ones who cling to their title.
They're the ones willing to ask:
"If I wasn't defined by what I do, what would I want my next chapter to look like?"
Sometimes the answer is another job.
Sometimes it isn't.
But the question is worth asking.

I had a conversation this week with a business owner who said something that stuck with me:
"If someone goes to Home Depot to buy a drill, they don't want a drill. They want a hole."
Simple.
But it's also one of the best explanations of career and business decision-making I've heard. Too many people become attached to the solution before they've fully understood the problem.
"I need another job."
"I need to start a business."
"I need to retire."
"I need to consult."
Maybe. But before deciding on the vehicle, it's worth understanding what you're actually trying to create.
More income?
More autonomy?
More purpose?
More flexibility?
More control?
The solution often changes once the problem becomes clear.
That's why every conversation I have starts with understanding the person, not prescribing the path.
Helping people move from uncertainty to clarity is what we do.
Career coaching isn't about pressure—it's about gaining clarity, building momentum, and moving forward with confidence. You don't have to figure out your next chapter alone. Sometimes, the right conversation is all it takes to unlock new possibilities.
It's a privilege to help professionals explore what's next and take meaningful steps toward a future that aligns with their goals.

One of the biggest misconceptions about what I do:
People think if we have a conversation, I'm trying to sell them a business.
I'm not.
The people I work with go through a structured discovery process using proven assessments, exercises, and conversations designed to help them see themselves, their options, and their next chapter more clearly.
Some leave with greater confidence in the job they're already pursuing. Some negotiate better roles. Some pursue consulting or additional income streams. Some explore business ownership. My job isn't to tell you what to do.
It's to help you make a more informed decision than you could have made on your own.
Sometimes the greatest value isn't finding a different answer.
It's asking better questions.

The most valuable opportunities in my life never came from an application.
They came from conversations.
An introduction. A relationship. One person willing to say:
"You should talk to..."
At 20, a conversation led to an internship that changed the trajectory of my career.
Today, many of the people I work with started because someone simply said:
"You should talk to Steven."
We're better when we're connected.
What conversations are you not having that could change the direction of your career, income, or life?
The opportunity you're looking for may not be online.
It may be one conversation away.
A conversation this week stuck with me.
On paper, he has everything most people are chasing.
Successful career. Good income. Financial security.
And yet the question wasn't "How do I make more money?"
It was: "What would a different life look like?"
Not because something was wrong. Because he was finally giving himself permission to ask. Most people never do.
They're so busy building a life they never stop to examine whether it's the one they actually want.
