My heart is heavy today as I announce that I’ll be skipping this year’s swim season.
Since I first began teaching my first student, Leia, in 2013 (I was 12 years old), swim has been my life.
It feels weird -unnatural- to not be in the water every day.
But at the same time, my body is thanking me. I have multiple chronic illnesses that just don’t want me in the water anymore. Safety is my top priority, and the nature of my condition makes it impossible for me to be safe while teaching your children.
I have had the privilege of teaching for 14 years, in 5 different states… public pools, indoor pools, private pools, even beaches.
My oldest student was in her nineties. My youngest was just 3 weeks old.
I’ve learned from the most amazing coaches, many of whom are here in Florida.
I have devoted my everything to this job. I am mourning the fact that I can no longer serve the community in this way.
Stopping swim is unfortunately one of the lifestyle changes required in order to improve my quality of life. But it feels like more than just ‘switching gears’. It feels like losing a version of who I’ve always been.
Maybe one day -hopefully soon- I can come back to this.
Until then, please still prioritize survival swim for your children.
If you are in the Oviedo/Winter Springs area, I highly recommend the amazingly sweet and talented Kayla Doering
Have an amazing summer anyone. Stay safe (and stay away from puddle jumpers for the love of god)
- Hannah ❤️
