Ken Griffey Sr. stepped to the plate and homered. Moments later, Ken Griffey Jr. followed with one of his own—making them the first father and son to hit back-to-back home runs in a major-league game.

Today’s Gazette also remembers George Wright’s remarkable 1872 hat catch, Connie Mack taking charge, Red Ames’ brilliant debut and Denny McLain’s 30th victory.

On September 13, 1946, Ted Williams found the one place the defense had abandoned.

With the fielders shifted toward right, Williams drove the baseball into open left field and raced around the bases for the only inside-the-park home run of his career. The 1–0 victory clinched Boston’s American League pennant.

Also in today’s Gazette: Ty Cobb completes a nine-homer season without clearing a fence in 1909, 17-year-old Bob Feller strikes out 17 in 1936, Willie Mays hits career home run number 500 in 1965, and Rickey Henderson steals his 101st base of 1983.

On September 12, 1962, Tom Cheney struck out 21 batters—the most ever recorded by a major-league pitcher in a single game.

Cheney needed 16 innings to complete the extraordinary performance, throwing 228 pitches as Washington defeated Baltimore, 2–1.

Also in today’s Gazette: Roger Peckinpaugh becomes a 23-year-old manager in 1914, Al Lopez hits baseball’s final recorded bounce home run in 1930, Carl Yastrzemski reaches 3,000 hits in 1979, and a shortstop records his 88th extra-base hit of 1996.

On September 11, 1974, St. Louis and New York played one of the longest games in major-league history. The Cardinals finally prevailed, 4–3, after 202 batters came to the plate.
