This shipbuilding infographic presents the shipwright's treenail driver, a traditional technique used to secure hull planks during the Age of Sail [2]. The graphic shows a carpenter using a heavy maul to drive oak dowels into the ship's frame. The callouts explain how driving wedges expanded the wood to lock the joints. It provides a detailed look at shipyard labor, demonstrating the rust-proof fastenings that allowed wooden hulls to withstand years of heavy ocean use.

During the 4th of July celebration of our Nations 250th Birthday we explored the submarine uss Drum at Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile Alabama.

Wow and yet another Legend has passed!

Zale Parry, 1933-2026.
Tribute to a legend, a pioneer, an inspiration, the First Lady of Diving.
Zale is best known for her role in Sea Hunt, but Zale has been way more than that her entire life and career.
Zale has been the face of scuba diving for millions for decades. At a time (1950s) when women were not involved in the sport and the gear was not designed for them, Zale became one of the first women scuba instructors, tested gear, was a competitive swimmer, underwater photographer, and the go-to actress for anything underwater.
Zale was one of the initial inductees in the Women Divers Hall of Fame class of 2000.
In 2006, she launched the Zale Parry Scholarship, awarded annually to an outstanding young man or woman diver who is enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate academic program or who is engaged in accredited fieldwork in undersea exploration, marine conservation, hyperbaric medical research, or diving equipment technology. The goal of the Zale Parry Scholarship is to encourage and enable future generations of divers to carry on Zale Parry’s legacy.
May you rest in peace, Zale, and know that your legacy will live on. It has been an honor to know you.

Another Legend has passed, rest easy Mr. Wilson.

It’s is with great sadness we share that
Longtime NSS-CDS member Forrest Wilson died at the age of 82 last Thursday, July 16, 2026, following a stroke.

Forrest had lived in a care unit with his family nearby in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, for the last several years.

Forrest’s contributions to caving and cave diving are legendary and too numerous to list here. He was the NSS-CDS’s first Training Director and was a long-serving cave diving coordinator for the National Cave RescueCommission (NCRC).

Forrest codesigned the directional line arrow used all over the world today. He improved on Lewis Holtzendorff’s triangular tape arrows (“Dorff markers”) by revising the line slot angles and notches to retain the guideline. He made a first run of 100, and the word spread.

In the CDS’s early years, Forrest worked with
Wes Skiles and Joe Prosser to develop a cave and cavern certification program that has produced more qualified divers than all the other organizations combined.

Forrest’s last dive was at Jackson Blue with his longtime dive partner Mark Wenner, with whom he also made his 500th and 1000th dives.

The next Underwater Speleology will publish a tribute to Forrest to honor his long history of service and his many accomplishments.
