When your saddle is too small for your horse, you invite TROUBLE! 😈
Just like you wouldn't be happy or comfortable in shoes 👠 that were too small, your horse isn't happy in a saddle that is too small either. Most riders look at saddle fit for themselves… but what about the horse? A saddle that’s too small doesn’t just feel 'cramped', it can create a chain reaction of problems in the horse’s body and behaviour.
What actually happens when a saddle is too small? 🤷‍♀️
• Pressure on withers, shoulders, and back. A small saddle concentrates weight in all the wrong places, creating soreness and long‑term discomfort.
• Restricted shoulder movement. If the saddle blocks the scapula, the horse can’t lift, reach, or move freely. This affects every gait/every transition.
• Back pain + muscle damage. Tight panels and limited space lead to bruising, muscle atrophy, and chronic tension through the topline.
• Behaviour changes: Bucking, rearing, rushing, refusing to move… “naughty” behaviours are simply pain responses.
• Slippage + instability. A small saddle rarely sits where it should, increasing the risk of slipping sideways or backwards.
• Uneven weight distribution. This is where pressure sores, white hairs, and tissue damage begin.
• Reduced performance. A horse in discomfort won’t stretch, lift, or engage. Freedom disappears, and so does willingness.
