I opened my own center in Berkeley!
I’d like to tell a little of the story of how I got here.
Over the next few weeks I will write a few posts that will share some of the journey I have been on...
My career as a healer started with massage, Chinese folk medicine practices, craniosacral therapy, and energetic “low-force/no-force” techniques. From there, I moved into myofascial therapy, chiropractic, and sports medicine.
But over the years, I’ve been pulled deeper—into the nervous system, systems biology, neuroplasticity, and human development.
Underlying all of it have been a few questions that continue to fascinate me:
How does this incredibly complex body-mind develop into who we are? What forces—physical, biological, environmental, cultural—shape that development? And how can we work with those processes to improve health, performance, and physical, mental, and spiritual well-being?
Those questions have led me down a long road of studying developmental and functional neurology, functional medicine, nutrition, rehabilitation, and a lot of other disciplines I never imagined would become part of my work when I started.

Can a colored lens change how the brain functions?
In functional neurology, we’re interested in the central integrative state of the nervous system—essentially, the moment-to-moment balance of excitation, inhibition, and responsiveness across interconnected neural networks.
Vision is one of the largest sources of sensory input into the brain. And light doesn’t simply allow us to see—it influences activity throughout the nervous system.
Different wavelengths of light preferentially stimulate different retinal photoreceptors and retinal circuits. From there, signals travel into pathways involving the thalamus, visual cortex, midbrain, hypothalamus, and autonomic nervous system.
That means changing the spectral qualities of the light entering the eyes can sometimes change more than visual perception.
In the clinic, carefully selected colored lenses may produce immediate changes in things like:
• eye tracking and fixation
• balance and postural stability
• muscle tone
• spatial orientation
• visual comfort
• headache or light sensitivity
• autonomic arousal
The important point is that there isn’t one universally “good” color.
A color that appears organizing or calming for one nervous system may be neutral—or even provocative—for another. In functional neurology, we can introduce different lenses and then re-test objective neurological findings to see whether the nervous system becomes more or less organized.
This is a useful example of a larger principle of neuroplastic rehabilitation:
Change the sensory input → observe the neurological response → adjust the stimulus accordingly.
Sometimes a surprisingly small change in sensory input can produce a measurable change in how the nervous system organizes itself.
