Sometimes people join because someone else wants to train.

About a year ago, Bailey walked through our doors with her younger brother, Liam. As their mom put it, Bailey was his “emotional support sister.”

Then something changed.

One day Liam couldn’t make it… and Bailey showed up anyway.

That’s usually the moment you know someone has caught the bug.

Since then, Bailey has put together some incredible progress:

🏋️ Squat: 45 → 210 lb
🏋️ Deadlift: 95 → 237.5 lb
🏋️ Press: 27 → 71 lb
🏋️ Bench: 50 → 93 lb

Those numbers didn’t happen because of motivation or hype. They happened because she kept showing up, trusted the process, and added a little more weight to the bar over and over again.

We’re proud of the work you’ve put in, Bailey. Here’s to many more PRs. 💪

There are a lot of people working in the fitness industry.

Far fewer know how to consistently make people stronger.

Jarrett’s story is one we hear over and over: study exercise science, enter the traditional fitness world, then realize there’s a huge gap between knowing anatomy and actually coaching someone to get results.

At Starting Strength, the goal isn’t to sell another training package or hope members keep showing up.

The goal is simple:
Get people stronger.

That’s why every coach goes through years of education, hands-on coaching, evaluation, and continuing development before earning the Starting Strength Coach credential.

Strength changes lives. Coaching is how it happens.

A public service announcement:

If my 68-year-old mother is lifting numbers that aren’t far behind yours, it may be premature to complain about not being jacked yet.

Squat more.
Deadlift more.
Eat more.

Then file your complaint.

Darren just set two all-time PRs last week.

✅ Deadlift: 370 lbs
✅ Bench Press: 248 lbs

Darren has been training at Starting Strength St. Louis since we opened our doors in March of 2024, and he trained with Coach Brandon before that.

One of the biggest myths in strength training is that progress eventually just stops.

The reality is that when training is organized correctly and done consistently, people can keep getting stronger for years.

After locking out his 370-pound deadlift, Darren announced to the entire class that he can now deadlift a female grizzly bear.

We have not independently verified this claim, but we are proud of the PR nonetheless.

Congratulations, Darren.

“I just have to do the work.”

That may be the most underrated part of having a coach.

Alisa came to Starting Strength after surgeries on both feet and a long stretch of limited mobility. She was not looking to become a professional athlete. She wanted to move better, get stronger, and stop feeling stuck.

Now she is handling stairs without getting winded, getting in and out of vehicles more easily, opening tight jars, and answering the important question from her son:

“Mom, how much did you squat today?”

Strength training is not reserved for young athletes, fitness influencers, or people who already know what they are doing.

It is for regular people who want to be stronger, more capable, and harder to break.

At Starting Strength St. Louis, you do not have to guess what to do next. Your coach handles the programming, the technique, the adjustments, and the decisions.

You show up and do the work.

“Your spine is degenerating.”

Maybe.

Or maybe you’ve simply had a spine for several decades.

The problem isn’t that age-related changes show up on scans.

The problem is when people hear those findings without being told how common they are.

Getting stronger is usually a better plan than becoming afraid to move.

Dad probably doesn’t need another mug, tie, or grill tool he’ll use twice.

Give him something that actually changes things: the ability to get stronger, move better, and learn how to lift correctly with a coach watching every rep.

For Father’s Day, Learn to Lift sessions are 50% off.

This is perfect for the dad who has been “meaning to get back in shape,” wants to lift but doesn’t know where to start, or could use a little less guessing and a little more coaching.

DM us DAD and we’ll help you get him set up.

A high school football player told me he’s been training for a few weeks and is currently squatting 85 pounds because they’re keeping the weights light so nobody gets hurt.

Maybe he misunderstood the program. Maybe not.

But football is a collision sport.

If a kid is heading into football season with an 85-pound squat, is the bigger risk getting hurt in the weight room or getting hurt on the field because he’s not strong enough?

What do you think?

Lauren joined the Double Plate Club today with 225 for a triple.

She rushed the third rep a little, and she knew it — but this was still solid work, especially in less than two months of training.

Getting people you care about to lift is hard.

You can tell them over and over that strength training is one of the best things they can do for their health, for aging, for staying independent, for all of it… and a lot of times it still just doesn’t happen.

So I know how lucky I am that my mom not only started training, but trains at my gym, and that I get to coach her three times a week.

And now at 67 years old, just a few weeks from 68, she’s officially in the 600-Pound Club at Starting Strength St. Louis with a 601.5 total:

Squat: 238
Press: 86
Deadlift: 277.5

And the funny thing is, she was never chasing this. She never came in talking about how she wanted to join the 600-Pound Club. She just kept showing up, doing the work, and following the program.

That’s it.
That’s the secret.

And then one day you look up and your 67-year-old mom has totaled over 600 pounds.

That’s pretty damn cool.

I know I’m biased, but I’m incredibly proud of her. And honestly, I still think it’s pretty wild that I get to coach my own mom and watch her do this.

Welcome to the 600-Pound Club, Mom. You earned it.
