Every parent has had this exact moment and almost nobody talks about it.
You are picking your kid up and you can see, from across the room, that something is off. Standing a little outside the group. Quieter on the way home than they should be. And when you ask, you get the two words every parent gets. They're fine.
Maybe they are. The hard part is that there is no way to check. Kids do not have the vocabulary to explain what happened at school today, and by the time they do, they have already decided not to.
Here is what a mat does that a conversation cannot. A kid cannot hide on it. You see it in ten minutes, where they hesitate, when they give up, whether they look at the person across from them. Not because we ask. Because the room asks for them.
We are not going to tell you jiu-jitsu makes children talk more. It does not. It just gives you somewhere to watch them be honest with their body while they figure out the words.
If you have been getting "I'm fine" for a while now, double tap. You are not the only one. 👇
