Newburyport Snow Angels: Volunteers Needed to Help Neighbors Weather the Winter
NEWBURYPORT, MA — Winter is coming, and Newburyport Recreation & Youth Services (NRYS) is looking for residents willing to grab a shovel and lend a hand through the Newburyport Snow Angels Program.
The Snow Angels Program connects community volunteers with Newburyport residents who are unable to safely clear snow from their property because of age or physical limitations. It is a simple idea with a big impact: neighbors helping neighbors.
“The Snow Angels program is a life saver for senior residents with financial and physical limitations. I hear from seniors who just do not have the capacity to shovel their sideways, which is upsetting for them. Knowing that a Newburyport resident partner is able to help them meet their civic duty is reassuring and certainly eases the burden of homeownership,” said Sara Landry, Executive Director, Newburyport Senior/Community Center. “At the same time, we have neighbors who are willing and able to help. Snow Angels brings those two groups together.”
We Need More Snow Angels
The biggest need this winter is volunteers.
You don't have to be a professional snow shoveler. You just need to be willing to give some time, bring a shovel, and help a neighbor when snow arrives. Volunteers can sign up individually, with a friend, as a family, or as part of a neighborhood, community group, business, or organization.
A typical volunteer commitment may simply mean clearing a walkway or driveway after a storm. Volunteers and residents are connected through the program, allowing community members to provide assistance where it is needed.
One storm. One shovel. One neighbor. It can make a huge difference.
The Snow Angels Program is part of Newburyport's ongoing effort to build a connected, caring community where residents look out for one another. The City has long recognized the importance of connecting residents who need snow-clearing assistance with those willing to help.
Who Can Be a Snow Angel?
Anyone who is willing and able to safely shovel snow can volunteer.
We especially encourage:
Individuals and families
High school and college students
Neighborhood groups
Civic and service organizations
Local businesses and employees
Faith communities
Sports teams and youth groups
Retirees and community volunteers
Friends who want to volunteer together
“This is one of those volunteer opportunities where you can see the difference you make immediately,” says Andrea Egmont, Director of Newburyport Rec and Youth Services. “You don't need to organize an event, attend a meeting, or make a long-term commitment. When it snows, you grab your shovel and help someone who needs it.”
Be the Neighbor Who Shows Up
For a resident who is unable to shovel, a cleared walkway can mean much more than getting rid of snow. It can mean being able to safely get out the front door, get to an appointment, receive a delivery, or simply feel connected to the community.
Newburyport residents who need assistance and residents who would like to volunteer are encouraged to sign up through the Snow Angels Program.
