“Running has given me a positive outlet during difficult moments and helped me unlock a level of mental and physical resilience I didn’t know was possible.”
Meet Nicholas Eliscu. 👏
Nicholas started running after the pandemic as a way to manage stress.
“It gives me a chance to clear my head, quiet the outside world for a bit, and focus on showing up for myself.”
Nicholas began running local races in 2023 and joined NYRR to “connect with like-minded people who share the same passion for movement.” This year, he’s taking part in the 9+1 program to run the TCS New York City Marathon in 2027.
“Running started as a way for me to clear my head but quickly became a huge part of my identity. Through NYRR and the running community, I’ve been able to challenge myself, meet amazing people, and build a routine that keeps me grounded.”
I mean it. 🫵

“I run because I can. I feel so grateful to be able to say that.”
Meet Mark Goldschmitt. 👏
Mark discovered NYRR after his wife, Jennifer, died from cancer in December 2017 at the age of 41. Jennifer had worked as an oncology nurse, and Mark was left to raise the couple’s three boys. In 2018, Mark met a longtime NYRR member named Cara, and she convinced him to run the 2019 Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K, which takes place the day before the TCS New York City Marathon.
He loved the experience, but he didn’t get serious about running until 2024, when he opted to take part in the 9+1 program. In 2025, at the age of 53, he made his 26.2-mile debut at the TCS New York City Marathon—a race he’d always watched on TV but never dreamed he’d actually run.
“It was really one of the great experiences of my life. Running through every borough and seeing the crowds and feeling the excitement was off the charts."
The race took on added meaning because Mark was able to raise money for the Northwell Cancer Institute. He’s since become an avid runner, and this year, having already finished the United Airlines NYC Half and the RBC Race for the Kids 4M, he’ll take on the RBC Brooklyn Half, the Citizens Queens 10K, the Achilles Hope & Possibility 4M, and the TCS New York City Marathon.
Mark works as a CPA and finds running to be the ultimate stress reliever—especially during tax season. He feels stronger than ever, and to those thinking about trying running, he has a message: “Just do it!”
“I am inspired by the thousands of people who show up and run with NYRR, people of all ages, shapes, and sizes. I am inspired by my three boys and am happy to show them that their dad can be an athlete, too.”
