When people ask me a question, I usually respond immediately with a question.
I’m 𝘯𝘰𝘵 trying to be a troll.
I just need to know where the glitch is.
You’re trying to process information and you’re missing pieces.
Quite often, the question you are asking is reflective of your current understanding.
Usually, me answering your question directly, will not give you any more clarity.
So I start digging.
🕵🏽♂️ Investigating. 🕵🏽♂️
Pretty soon we 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 realize where the gap is.
And so I do my best to address THAT piece.
Regurgitating information is rarely helpful.
I need you to “get it.”
In the moment, that’s all that matters.
Otherwise I’m just talking AT YOU.
That’s not coaching. That’s not what a teacher does.
This is why I don’t get super technical with most of my content.
I just need you to get certain ideas.
Most of you reading this are not high-level athletes.
You’re regular people.
Maybe you just feel a little older than should.
Or your back / hips are always talking to you.
You don’t really bring it up at work or when you’re catching up with your friends.
Why?
You don’t want to sound like you’re whining / complaining.
You’ve seen a bunch of people and they hit you with a “one size fits all” kind of approach.
They “hand-wave” you when you ask them a question.
Their answers sound good: “breathing,” “parasympathetic,” “posterior chain,” or “muscle imbalances.”
But they’re not saying anything. They’re just spouting rhetoric.
That’s 𝐍𝐎𝐓 good enough.
You NEED to understand. Otherwise, you’ll never be able to shoulder the responsibility of changing your situation & improving your life.
But what do I know? Maybe you like playing the victim.🤷🏽♂️
In which case, I’m probably NOT the coach for you.
People have told me they like my content because I can make stuff accessible.
Y’all don’t need to understand the vast depths of cognitive neuroscience & biomechanics to move & feel better.
Take this snapshot of my workshop with the fine folks at Coffee Project NY.
Baristas stand a LOT.
Many of the attendees talked about lower back issues.
So we took away their most common compensators: their lumbar extensors.
You extend your spine to breathe ~~~~> you’ll extend your spine just to stand.
This IS your default strategy: no wonder your back will start talking to you.
You’re using your back for EVERYTHING!
You breathe thousands of times a day.
If you’re standing at work, you’re consumed with tasks and will rely on the strategies to which you’re most accustomed.
So how do we navigate the world without using our lower back?
Learn to use OTHER things.
Namely: adductors & hamstrings.
And for the love of god, if you never see another post from me again, stop stretching your hamstrings & adductors (inner thighs).
Your back will thank you.

🏋🏽♂️ I am 𝐧𝐨𝐭 like most coaches. 🏋🏽♂️
First of all, people don’t come to me for body composition / general fitness anymore. There are literally THOUSANDS of those kinds of trainers in NYC.
Go THAT way. 👉🏽 👉🏽👉🏽
🧩 I solve different problems.🧩
I also don’t teach movement like anyone else (except for Mike & Kento).
❌I DON’T want you to feel your glutes.
❌I DON'T want you to just "use your core."
❌I DON'T want you to "push your knees out."
❌I DON'T want you to arch your back.
Why?
Simple.
I understand anatomy.🤣
Feeling glutes on single-leg exercises means you’re trying to make yourself fall.
Using your core usually means you’re just creating local tension. This is not integration. You’re just stiffening. This breeds fear. Yoda already told you where that leads.
Pushing your knees out keeps you from feeling hamstrings & adductors. These are WAY more important than glutes.
Arching your back means you’re USING your back muscles. Then you wonder why your back gets stiff when you do squats / deadlifts. 🤦🏽♂️
So yeah. You might hear me saying, “more round” when I’m cueing you on deadlifts.
It’s normal. Don’t freak out.
But I’ve also probably equipped you with a few other skills beforehand.
Got stubborn movement issues?
Let’s set up a 30 min call; just DM for a booking link.
I’ll probably connect some pieces for you.
You’ll have a few, “oooooh shiiiiiit” moments.
We’ll laugh.
You might get pi**ed that no one’s ever told you some of this stuff before.
It happens. 🤷🏽♂️
🤬Ok, I need to get this off my chest.🤬
If someone is telling you that you have to learn how to breathe diaphragmatically, *insert disproportionate violent response here.*
Stop.
Coaches, go read a book.
If you are alive in the here and now and reading this post, you are ALREADY breathing diaphragmatically.
There’s no other way to breathe.
What we care about is the other mechanisms that are at play when you are inhaling / exhaling.
We inhale by creating an area of relatively lower air pressure in our torso when compared to our external environment.
How MOST of us do this is via spinal extension (chest breathing OR belly breathing - they’re the same in my book).
If someone is telling you to belly breathe, tell them they must have the newest edition of Netter’s Atlas of Human Anatomy.
The edition I have says the lungs are in the chest. 🤷🏽♂️
Guess I don’t know anything. 🤣
Let’s go back to air pressure.🗣
Torso has to have lower air pressure than external environment, right?
Well we can subdivide the torso again.
Maintain intraabdominal pressure (resist belly expansion via obliques) on the inhale so now the chest cavity has relatively lower air pressure than your abdomen.
Pro Tip: You need to fully exhale before you inhale. Obliques also help with that.
Funny how that works ...
End Result?
MOAR OXYGEN IN LUNGS.
MOAR Parasympathetics.
Wonky patterns shut down.
Less back tension.
More ROM in all your joints.
It’s magic.
No, it’s just science.
But more people are calling me Dr. Strange.
I’m hip.
Mike is The Ancient One.

I see zombies everywhere.
But they don’t need to be bitten to be turned.
They just need to be shown:
* A hip flexor stretch
* A hip “opener”
* Pigeon pose
* Prying goblet squat
And that’s it.
*p**f*
Exit critical thinking skills.
But not you.
You’re better than that.
You want to investigate.
You don’t believe in wasting your time.
You need s**t that works.
Enter: my favorite self-assessments
Now these aren’t PERFECT.
But they’ll give you an idea of what to work on.

🚨Knee Issues 🚨
I get it.
You're getting older.
We all are.
Maybe stairs are a new foe to vanquish when the escalators are packed on the subway.
Or you just ... don't trust your knee all the time.
There was no injury that you're aware of.
It's like living in a Jaws movie. It's lurking ... beneath the surface.
Every so often you p**s your knee off.
You've gone to see people for it, but nobody's been able to give you a straight answer.
Some say you need to strengthen your quads. *cringe*
Some tell you you need "stronger glutes." *eye roll*
Someone is going to say "core." *yawn*
That's NOT how it works!
I have a theory.
Care to jump down this rabbit hole with me?
It's NOT a simple explanation (although I try my best).
Real answers require integration.
Do you REALLY want to know?
