I came across this from another swordsman’s page. I rings true to me.

In Japanese swordsmanship, one guard sits at the center of them all — balanced, versatile, and quietly dangerous.

Seigan no Kamae (正眼の構え) — often translated as the "correct eye" or "true eye" posture.

SEIGAN (正眼) — the correct eye; the sword's tip directed toward the opponent's eyes or center.
KAMAE (構え) — posture, guard.

In Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-Ryu — one of the oldest documented martial traditions in Japan — kamae are not just physical positions. They are states of readiness, awareness, and intent.

What makes Seigan so respected:

🔴 The center line. With the tip aimed at the opponent's eyes or center, Seigan controls the most direct path between two swordsmen — threatening attack while guarding against it.

🔴 Balance of offense and defense. It commits to neither fully. From Seigan, the swordsman can strike, parry, or transition — a posture of pure potential.

🔴 Awareness through the blade. The "correct eye" isn't only about where the sword points. It's about perceiving the opponent completely — intention, distance, timing.

🔴 Stillness with intent. Outwardly calm, inwardly alive. Seigan embodies the readiness that classical sword arts are built upon.

In the oldest sword traditions, the guard is never just a position. It’s a mindset.

The website is down and for good as we are closing on the 30th of April. Thank you to everyone who were part of our dojo. It has been wonderful meeting you all and practicing together through the years. I may open another dojo in Virginia and if I do we will have a new website and fb page. This page will be removed after the 30th also.
