Today, The Armory Foundation honors the life of our beloved founder, Dr. Norbert W. Sander Jr, on what would have been his 84th birthday. It was Dr. Sander's extraordinary vision that brought The Armory from a homeless shelter into the destination for track & field athletes as well as a hub for athletics and education for the entire community. His legacy lives on through every athlete who steps into The Armory.

Earlier last week, Ron Stefanski of DisruptED sat down with Rita Finkel, Co-President of The Armory Foundation, and Clayton Harding, Director of College Counseling for the Armory College Prep Program, to discuss how The Armory is helping shape brighter futures for students through its after-school programming.

One of the highlights of the conversation came when Clayton shared:

💬 “We have a 100% 4-year college acceptance rate since 2016”

That prompted Ron to ask:

💬 “So what do you think the secret sauce is here because not every program can boast that kind of a track record no pun intended?”

Clayton continued:

💬 “There's a lot of things that contribute... One of them is that we take them on trips to visit college. A lot of our students haven’t really gotten out of NYC to go see what a small liberal arts college for example might look like.”

Rita also spoke about the Foundation's commitment to supporting students beyond the classroom, explaining:

💬 “ Part of our roadmap is to provide the same benefit to our students that a lot of these urban school districts provide, so we are not a test prep group, we do a structured SAT, ACT in 10 weeks… I think the human touch, we have a very high touch point in our program. We work with about 60 students a year…”
