Lisa Ann was 16 years old when her father stopped speaking to her. They didn’t exchange a word for more than two decades, until a stroke left him vulnerable and, with her nearing 40, they tried to rebuild something resembling a relationship.

But the coldest blow came from her mother. In her father’s house, Lisa found photographs of herself hanging everywhere. In her mother’s, none. Not a portrait, not a postcard, not a trace that this daughter existed. “She acted as if I had died,” she said. Every time she tried to talk about the wounds from her childhood, her mother would steer the conversation toward her career in adult films, as if that explained everything. Her family even hid her grandfather’s death from her so she wouldn’t attend the funeral: they didn’t want it to look like they accepted her in public.

For years, Lisa believed it was her fault. Today, after therapy and a great deal of introspection, she understood something else: her family’s silence began long before her profession. “I did the best I could with the life I was given,” she says now, without apologizing for anything.
