โJust turn it off and come to dinnerโ may sound simple to us.
But for your child with ADHD, stopping one activity, shifting attention, and starting something new can take a lot of mental energy.
That resistance may not be defiance. Your child may need more time, clearer warnings, and help moving from one thing to the next.
Small changes in how we prepare children for transitions can make a big difference.

How To Help My Child
Hi I'm Sue! #HelpMyChild
I empower overwhelmed Moms to transform their childโs challenging behavio
Playdates can sound simple. But when you are raising a child with autism or ADHD, they can feel like a whole planning event.
โฃ๏ธ Will my child know what to do?
โฃ๏ธ Will the other child understand them?
โฃ๏ธ What if they donโt want to share?
โฃ๏ธ What if they get overwhelmed?
โฃ๏ธ What if it all goes wrong?
๐๐ฐ๐ฎ, ๐ ๐จ๐ฆ๐ต ๐ช๐ต.
Playdates do not have to be long, loud, or perfectly social to be successful.
Sometimes the best playdate is short, predictable, and built around something your child already enjoys.
๐ A quiet park visit.
๐ Lego side by side.
๐ A sensory bin.
๐ A walk with scooters.
๐ A simple craft.
๐ A favourite board game.
๐ A snack and one planned activity.
For our kids with autism and ADHD, connection can look different.
And that is ok.
The goal is not to force the perfect friendship moment.
The goal is to create a little space where your child feels safe enough to connect in their own way.

A meltdown does not mean failure.
It is not bad behaviour.
It is not your child trying to be difficult.
It is not proof that you did something wrong.
A meltdown is often a sign that your childโs nervous system is overwhelmed and needs safety, space, and support.
You can respond with more calm when you have a plan.

When your child with autism and ADHD is overwhelmed, what is usually the biggest trigger?
โฃ๏ธ Noise?
โฃ๏ธ Lights?
โฃ๏ธ Hunger?
โฃ๏ธ Heat?
โฃ๏ธ Transitions?
โฃ๏ธ Crowds?
โฃ๏ธ School mornings?
โฃ๏ธ Bedtime?
โฃ๏ธ Something else?
Sometimes meltdowns seem to come out of nowhere, but when you start tracking them, patterns can appear.
Maybe it is always after a busy morning.
Maybe it is when plans change.
Maybe it is when your child is hungry but cannot tell you yet.
Maybe it is after they have held everything together all day.
The trigger is not always obvious in the moment.
But noticing patterns can help you support your neurodivergent child before things escalate.
Tell me one trigger you have noticed lately.

Sometimes the reaction is not really about the tiny thing that just happened.
Hunger, tiredness, noise, demands, and a long day can slowly fill your childโs stress cup.

Before assuming your child is being difficult, pause and ask:
โCould their body be telling me they have nothing left?โ

Picky eating is not always about being fussy.
For our kids with autism and ADHD, food can feel hard for so many reasons.
โ ๏ธTexture.
โ ๏ธTemperature.
โ ๏ธTaste.
โ ๏ธSmell.
โ ๏ธColour.
โ ๏ธThe way food looks on the plate.
โ ๏ธFood touching other food.
โ ๏ธA brand changing the packaging.
โ ๏ธA food being slightly different from last time.
And if your child is overwhelmed by food, mealtimes can quickly become stressful for everyone.
So before you think, Why wonโt they just eat it?, try asking:
What part of this food feels hard for my child?
๐คท๐ผโ๏ธ Is it too crunchy?
๐คท๐ผโ๏ธ Too soft?
๐คท๐ผโ๏ธ Too mixed together?
๐คท๐ผโ๏ธ Too strong smelling?
๐คท๐ผโ๏ธ Too hot?
๐คท๐ผโ๏ธ Too cold?
๐คท๐ผโ๏ธ Too unpredictable?
When we understand what is sitting underneath the refusal, we can support our kids with more calm and less pressure.
You are not failing because mealtimes are hard.
You are learning what your childโs body and brain need to feel safe with food.

Progress in autism and ADHD is often found in the small moments.
The tiny steps.
The shorter meltdown.
The smoother transition.
The moment your child tries again.
The little victory only you noticed.
Those moments count.Do not let the world make you believe progress has to look big to matter.

Mum when you finally get a night out, do you feel โฆ
๐ Excited.
๐ Guilty.
๐ Happy.
๐ Anxious.
๐ Exhausted.
๐ A little bit fabulous.
๐ Also wondering if everyone at home is ok.
Honestly, it can feel like your brain has 47 tabs open.

So here is your little reminder, Mum.
โ
You are allowed to have a life outside of caring.
โ
You are allowed to laugh.
โ
You are allowed to dress up.
โ
You are allowed to leave the house without feeling like you have failed anyone.
Taking a breather does not make you less devoted.
It helps you come back with a little more room to breathe.

Neurodivergent kids do not need to be changed to be loved.
They need to be supported.
Accepted. Celebrated. Understood.
Your child deserves to grow up knowing they are not broken, not bad, and not too much.
And you deserve support as you learn how to help them through the hard parts.

A meltdown is not bad behaviour.
A meltdown is not your child being naughty.
It can happen when their body and brain are completely overwhelmed and they cannot cope anymore.
That shift matters, because when we see the overwhelm underneath the behaviour, we can respond with more calm and connection.
