At what point does optimizing your health start getting in the way of living your life?

As the coauthor of *Outlive*, Bill Gifford helped bring longevity into the mainstream. But recently, he shared a reminder that feels especially relevant in today's culture of constant tracking, measuring, and self-improvement. The goal isn't to become the most optimized version of yourself. The goal is to build a life you actually want to be around for.

Because health isn't the destination, it's the vehicle. And if your pursuit of longevity is costing you connection, joy, spontaneity, or meaning, it may be worth asking what you're really optimizing for.

What's one thing that makes your life worth living longer for?

Most longevity advice wasn’t built with women in mind.

For decades, much of the research on aging, metabolism, exercise, and longevity was conducted primarily in men. Yet women live longer and often spend more of those extra years managing chronic disease, cognitive decline, and mobility challenges.

According to experts, a truly female-centered approach to longevity needs to consider factors that are often left out of the conversation including hormonal health, ovarian aging, the mental load women carry, and even the role of social connection.

When we talk about loneliness, we often picture someone with no friends, no partner, and no support system, but that’s not how loneliness always works.

According to developmental psychologist Margie Lachman, Ph.D., loneliness isn’t necessarily about how many people are in your life. You can still feel lonely while married, surrounded by friends, or deeply connected on paper. What matters is whether you feel supported, understood, and connected.

On the latest episode of the mindbodygreen podcast, our founder sits down with Margie Lachman, Ph.D., to explore why midlife may be one of the most important and misunderstood chapters of life.

Quick truth: when researchers told people a plain lotion would relieve pain, their brains literally released opioids. The placebo effect isn’t a mind trick. It’s biochemistry, using the same pathways as some of the most powerful pain meds on the planet. Naloxone, the drug used to reverse overdoses, can even block it.

This is the rabbit hole Dr. Joshua Brown went down after an inoperable brain tumor diagnosis at 30, two weeks after his daughter was born. Years of investigating the placebo effect and documented cases of healing led him to one conclusion: belief isn’t wishful thinking. It’s biology. But here’s the catch, you can’t fake it. Affirmations stay on the surface. Real belief is built from what your nervous system has actually seen happen.
