IBM is planning to build the largest quantum computer so far, by linking together smaller machines to create one with a recording-breaking number of quantum bits, or qubits. The firm’s first steps on this path in 2025 should see it hit a new qubit record, and it eventually plans to more than triple the size of the largest existing quantum computer.

It has only been six years since IBM unveiled its first commercial quantum computer. That device had 20 qubits, the basic building blocks of any quantum computer, and was available for researchers to use over the internet. Now, the company’s largest quantum chip, called Condor, has 1121 qubits, though IBM’s Jay Gambetta says the average user of its quantum computing services only works with 100 qubits.

Vitamin K is a compound that is crucial for blood clotting.

Nobel Prize laureate Edward Doisy was the first person to produce it in a pure form. By studying different analogues he established the distinction between vitamin K1 (shown) which was isolated from alfalfa, and vitamin K2, isolated from fish meal. His work became especially important in treating bleeding among small children.

This week’s view unveils a starry scene called Terzan 4, which is a globular cluster – a collection of stars bound together by their mutual gravitational attraction.

These clusters can contain millions of individual stars! Hubble’s launch in 1990 revolutionized the study of globular clusters because the telescope orbits just above Earth’s atmosphere, which gives it a crystal-clear view free of atmospheric distortion, and allows astronomers to distinguish individual stars in these densely crowded regions.
