🍄 WHY I’M SUCH A FAN OF FUNCTIONAL MUSHROOMS
The older I get, the more I think about longevity. Not just how many years I can live, but how many of those years I can actually feel good, stay active, think clearly, travel, work out, and enjoy life with the people I love.
That’s healthspan, and it’s one of the biggest reasons functional mushrooms have become part of my daily routine.
When people hear “mushrooms,” they often think of something you put on a pizza. 😂 But functional mushrooms contain some pretty fascinating naturally occurring compounds, including beta glucans, polysaccharides, triterpenes, phenolic compounds, sterols, and ergothioneine.
One I find especially interesting is ergothioneine, a naturally occurring antioxidant amino acid that our bodies cannot make, so we have to get it through our diet. (Also, Something I didn’t learn about in medical school.) Mushrooms are one of the richest dietary sources. Researchers are studying ergothioneine for its role in protecting cells from oxidative stress and supporting healthy aging. It has even been proposed by researchers as a potential “longevity vitamin,” although we still need more human research to understand its long term impact.
Then there are beta glucans, naturally occurring fibers found in mushroom cell walls. They interact with our gut and immune system and are being researched for their potential roles in immune function, metabolic health, and gastrointestinal health.
This is one reason I love that Adapt contains EIGHT different functional mushrooms, because each brings something a little different to the table.
🍄 LION’S MANE
Probably the mushroom most people associate with brain health. Lion’s Mane contains unique compounds that have generated interest for their potential roles in supporting cognition, memory, mood, and healthy neurological function.
🍄 REISHI
Reishi has a long history of traditional use and contains beta glucans and triterpenes. It is being studied for its potential to support immune function, resilience, healthy energy levels, metabolic health, and overall wellness.
🍄 CHAGA
Chaga contains a variety of antioxidant compounds. Research has focused on its potential role in supporting the body’s natural antioxidant defenses, cellular health, and healthy immune function.
🍄 TURKEY TAIL
This one is especially interesting because of its polysaccharides and beta glucans. Turkey Tail has been studied extensively for its interaction with the immune system and gut, two systems that are incredibly interconnected.
🍄 MAITAKE
Another mushroom rich in beta glucans and other bioactive compounds. Maitake is being investigated for its potential roles in supporting immune function, metabolic wellness, and healthy glucose metabolism.
🍄 SHIITAKE
Way more than something you cook with! Shiitake provides beta glucans, ergothioneine, and other nutrients being studied for their roles in gut health, immune health, cardiovascular wellness, and maintaining healthy cholesterol levels already within a normal range.
🍄 KING TRUMPET
King Trumpet is another notable source of ergothioneine and other antioxidant compounds. It is being studied for its potential roles in cellular protection, digestive health, metabolic health, and cardiovascular wellness.
🍄 BLUE OYSTER
Oyster mushrooms are another source of beta glucans and ergothioneine. Research continues to explore their potential roles in antioxidant protection, immune function, cardiovascular wellness, and healthy lipid metabolism.
But THIS is the part I really want people to understand.
Why wait until you feel poorly to start investing in your health?
So much of healthcare is reactive. Something goes wrong, we develop symptoms, and THEN we start thinking about what we could change.
I want to think differently.
I want to consistently support my body while I feel good, with the goal of continuing to feel good for as long as possible.
Every day our cells experience normal oxidative stress from metabolism, environmental exposures, stress, less than perfect nutrition, lack of sleep, exercise, and simply getting older. Our bodies have incredible systems for dealing with that stress, and nutrition is one piece of supporting those systems.
Functional mushrooms aren’t medications, and they aren’t a magic bullet. Research on many of their potential benefits is still evolving. But the bioactive compounds within them continue to be studied for their roles in brain health, immune function, gut health, metabolic health, antioxidant protection, cellular health, and healthy aging.
And THAT is why I take Adapt every single day.
I personally take the full recommended serving of 4 capsules daily. I know others who choose to take more, but I’m not skimping on all the goodness packed into these ingredients. 🍄
If I’m going to incorporate something into my routine because I value the ingredients it provides, I want to take the recommended amount and take it consistently.
And I’ll admit, this is one of the perks of being a Brand Partner. 😂 That discount comes in handy when you actually use and love the products!
I would much rather invest in things that support my health today AND decades from now.
Short term, I want to support my focus, mood, energy, resilience, and immune health.
Long term?
I’m playing the longevity game.
I don’t just want to live a long life. I want healthspan.
I want to be 70 or 80 and still traveling. Still lifting weights. Still walking miles. Still gardening. Still thinking clearly. Still independent. Still keeping up with my family.
I want to actually ENJOY my golden years. ❤️
Can functional mushrooms guarantee that? Of course not.
But I absolutely believe the small choices we make every single day add up over decades.
Nutrition. Movement. Muscle. Sleep. Stress management. And consistently giving our bodies the nutrients they need to function well.
Short term, I want to feel good.
Long term, I want to still feel good decades from now.
Because the goal isn’t simply adding more years to my life.
It’s adding more LIFE to those years. 🍄❤️
Why wait until you don’t feel well to start caring about your future health?
Invest in the body you want to be living in 20, 30, and 40 years from now.
As always, supplements aren’t appropriate for everyone. Talk with your healthcare provider, especially if you take prescription medications, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have underlying medical conditions.
