This is an adventure, not a race. Paddle within your ability and enjoy the river!
Guadalupe Kayak Adventure β Q&A
Does it have to be a kayak?
No! All paddlers are welcome. Kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and other appropriate paddle craft are welcome as long as you are comfortable using them on the river.
How long will it take me to finish?
Estimated paddle times are:
- 6 miles: about 2-3 hours
- 11 miles: about 4-5 hours
- 16 miles: about 6-7 hours
These are estimates only. River flow, stops at aid stations, portages, and your paddling pace can all affect your total time. This is an adventure, not a raceβtake your time and enjoy the Guadalupe!
When is the event?
Saturday, September 19th. The 16-mile heat starts at 8:00 AM.
Where does the event start?
All paddlers will start at the Canyon Lake Dam and travel downstream on the Guadalupe River.
What distances can I choose from?
We have three approximate distance options:
- 6 Miles β Exit at Rio Guadalupe Resort
- 11 Miles β Exit at Mountain Breeze Campground
- 16 Miles β Exit near Hueco Springs / 1st Crossing
River mileage is approximate and may vary slightly.
Where do I park?
Rio Guadalupe Resort & RV Park will be the main event hub for parking, shuttles, and the after-event gathering.
How do the shuttles work?
Transportation will be provided to help get paddlers and their boats to/from the river based on their selected distance.
Do I need to bring my own kayak or paddle craft?
For now, the event is bring your own, but we are working on having a limited number of rental options available.
Can I use a tandem/double kayak?
Yes! Tandem and double kayaks are welcome. There will be an additional $40 charge for the second rider, due at the event.
What is included with registration?
Registration includes shuttle transportation, multiple aid stations with drinks and snacks, breakfast, lunch, river support, and the after-event gathering.
Will there be aid stations?
Yes. We will have multiple support/aid stations along the route with hydration and snacks.
What are the river conditions expected to be?
The Guadalupe is currently expected to be flowing around 300 CFS, which should provide beautiful and enjoyable paddling conditions. River flow and conditions can change before event day.
Are there rapids or technical sections?
Yes. There are several faster-moving and more technical areas along the Guadalupe. Horseshoe Falls is one of the main areas where extra support will be positioned.
Do I need kayaking experience?
You should be comfortable controlling your paddle craft in moving water. This isn't a flat-water lake paddle, and participants should understand basic river safety before participating.
Do I have to complete the longest distance?
No. Choose the distance that fits your ability and how much time you want to spend on the river.
Can I change my distance during the event?
Our goal is to give paddlers flexibility, but shuttle logistics and river support are planned around your selected distance. More details will be provided before event day.
What should I bring?
Bring your paddle craft, paddle, properly fitting PFD/life jacket, sunscreen, water shoes, dry bag, and anything else you normally use for a day on the river.
Is a life jacket required?
Yes. Every participant should have a properly fitting PFD and follow all applicable river and boating safety requirements.
What happens if river conditions change?
Participant safety comes first. Routes, start times, distances, or other event details may be adjusted if river flow, weather, or other conditions require it.
Where is the after party?
The main post-paddle gathering will be at Rio Guadalupe Resort & RV Park.
Is there a group discount?
Yes, send me a message and let me know your group/family size.
