From grit and gears to clear blue water and inner tubes! 🌊⚙️

Did you know the Comal River wasn't always just a place for a summer float?

In the mid-1800s, this powerful waterway was the industrial heartbeat of the community. German settlers used its reliable, spring-fed flow to power everything from gristmills and sawmills to massive textile factories.

As the world changed after 1900, so did the riverbanks. The industrial hubs shifted, paving the way for the beautiful recreational spaces we love today, like the iconic Landa Park and Prince Solms Park.

Next time you’re drifting down the "longest shortest river in Texas," take a second to imagine the water wheels that once turned where you’re now splashing! 🎡✨

The "Tube Chain" Disaster ⛓️🌊

⚠️ POV: You said "Let's just tie all our tubes together, it'll be easy!" 🪵🥨

Expectation: A peaceful, synchronized floating island of best friends drifting gracefully down the Comal. 🏝️✨

Reality:
30 minutes in, your rope is tied into a nautical knot no human can untangle. 🪢

You’ve accidentally collected two random strangers, a stray paddle, and a floating flip-flop. 🩴

You're currently spinning in circles entering the Tube Chute sideways. 🌀🌪️
Who is the friend that ALWAYS promises they know how to tie the knot, but leaves you floating like a tangled web of spaghetti? 🍝

Tag them and tell them to practice their knots before this weekend! 👇

💦 The hidden plumbing of the Edwards Aquifer:

🔹 The Springs Stagger Their Shutdowns: Comal Springs isn't just one single spout; it’s a system of seven major springs and dozens of smaller fissures. When aquifer levels drop, the higher-elevation "upper spring runs" (the ones you walk past on the park trails) are the first to stall out and go dry.

🔹 Deep-Water Fissures to the Rescue: While the shallow park springs have paused, the deeper, lower-elevation fissures at the bottom of Landa Lake are still pushing out tens of millions of gallons of water a day!

🔹 Low Flow, But Steady: The river's average historical flow is around 284 cubic feet per second (cfs), and while drought has dropped that down significantly to around 60–70 cfs, it is still enough to keep the main downstream channel consistently fed, refreshing, and supporting local wildlife.

Nature's subterranean plumbing is incredibly resilient! Have you been out to see the changes at the park yourself lately? Let's talk in the comments. 👇
