⚾🥎 CBSL Coach’s Corner: When a Hitter Is Struggling — Don’t Just Let Them Struggle

If a player is having a hard time making contact in practice, a coach shouldn’t just keep feeding pitch after pitch and hope it fixes itself.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is slow it down and simplify it.

A realistic coaching approach might look like:

• Pull the player aside for a few one-on-one reps
• Go back to the tee and work on balance, setup, and barrel path
• Use soft toss or side toss to help them see the ball longer
• Shorten the swing if they are getting too big or too long
• Check whether they are standing too close or too far from the plate
• Make sure the bat size and weight fit the player
• Give them one simple correction at a time instead of five things at once
• Let them feel a few successful swings before putting them back into live pitching
• Build their confidence instead of letting frustration take over

Not every struggling hitter needs a complete swing rebuild.

Sometimes they just need a coach to stop, watch, identify the problem, and give them a few focused reps.

The goal of practice isn’t to see who can already hit.

It’s to teach the kids who are still learning how.

Don’t just keep pitching to the struggle. Coach through it.

Slow it down. Simplify it. Build confidence.

⚾🥎 CBSL Coach’s Corner: Know Your Position — Third Base

Third base is the hot corner for a reason. The ball can get there fast, so a third baseman has to be ready before every pitch.

A third baseman should be learning to:

• Stay low and ready for hard-hit ground balls
• Charge bunts and slow rollers aggressively
• Know when to stay home and protect third base
• Communicate with the pitcher, catcher, and shortstop on bunts
• Make strong, accurate throws across the diamond
• Know when there is a force play at third
• Hold runners close when needed
• Back up throws and stay involved when the ball is hit elsewhere
• Know where to go on cutoffs and relays
• Think ahead about where the next play may be

On a bunt: third base has to read the ball quickly. Depending on where it is placed, the third baseman, pitcher, or catcher may field it. If third base charges, another player may need to cover the bag. That responsibility should be communicated before the pitch whenever possible.

With runners on base: the third baseman should know whether they need to stay near the bag, prepare for a force play, or move toward the ball. They should always know where the runners are and what the next play could be.

And even when the ball is not hit to third, the third baseman still has a job. They may be covering the bag, backing up a throw, helping on a relay, or positioning themselves for the next play.

Third base teaches quick reactions, courage, communication, and awareness.

Don’t just put a player at the hot corner. Teach them how to own it.

Keep an eye out for Teddy at the concession stand!

Teddy has a new job — he’ll be collecting donations to help CBSL raise funds for a new 3-ton mini split system for our concession stand. As a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit league, every little bit helps us continue making improvements for our players, families, and volunteers.

And you’ll get to follow along! We’ll have a visible fundraiser tracker at the concession stand showing exactly how much Teddy has collected and how close we are to reaching our $3,500 goal. We can’t wait to watch those paw prints fill up as our community works toward the goal together!

You can donate cash directly in Teddy or use our Venmo or PayPal options at the window. If donating digitally, please put “Mini Split Donation” in the payment note so we can make sure it gets added to Teddy’s total.

Small donations, spare change, round-ups — it all adds up.

Help Teddy keep CBSL cool! 💙💛

⚾🥎 CBSL Coach’s Corner: Can You Cover the Plate?

You’ve probably heard a coach tell a hitter:

“Reach your bat across home plate. Can the barrel cover the outside corner without you leaning?”

That simple check helps a player figure out whether they are standing at a good distance from the plate.

If a hitter is too far away, they may have to reach for outside pitches and lose balance. If they are too close, they may get jammed on inside pitches.

The goal is to find a setup where the hitter can:

• Cover the outside corner
• Stay balanced
• Avoid reaching or lunging
• Still handle an inside pitch
• Start from a comfortable, repeatable position

Every hitter is built a little differently, so this is not about making every player stand in the exact same spot.

It is about teaching them why their distance from the plate matters and giving them a simple way to check it themselves.

Don’t just tell them where to stand. Teach them how to know.

⚾🥎 CBSL Coach’s Corner: Know Your Position — Shortstop

Shortstop is more than fielding ground balls in the middle of the infield. It is one of the busiest defensive positions on the field and requires communication, awareness, quick decisions, and constant movement.

A shortstop should be learning to:

• Field ground balls to both sides and make strong, accurate throws
• Know when to charge a slow roller and when to stay back
• Cover second base when the second baseman is pulled away
• Know when the second baseman is covering instead
• Communicate clearly on balls hit between shortstop and third base
• Work with second base on force plays and double plays
• Know where to be on steals and plays at second
• Move into position for cutoffs and relays from the outfield
• Back up third base or second base when the play calls for it
• Track runners and know where the next play should be
• Communicate with the infield before the pitch so everyone knows their responsibility

On a ball hit up the middle: shortstop and second base have to communicate. One player fields the ball while the other gets to the bag or becomes the backup. Both players should know their responsibility before the pitch whenever possible.

On balls hit to the outfield: shortstop is often heavily involved in cutoffs and relays, especially on balls hit to left field and center field. They need to know where to line up, where the throw should go, and when to let a throw continue through.

With runners on base: shortstop should always be thinking ahead. Who is covering second? Is there a force play? Where should the next throw go? What base needs protection if the ball gets away?

And when the ball is not hit to shortstop, they still have a job. They may be covering a base, backing up a teammate, becoming part of a relay, or positioning themselves for the next throw.

Shortstop is a position that teaches players to think one step ahead.

Don’t just put your strongest arm at shortstop. Teach the player how to command the position.

⚾🥎 CBSL Coach’s Corner: Every Player Came to Play

Rec ball should be about development, opportunity, and learning how to be part of a team.

That does not mean every player will get the exact same number of innings or play every position. Some positions require more experience, some situations require different decisions, and safety always matters.

But coaches should still be intentional about rotations.

Things to think about:

• Are the same players sitting more often than everyone else?
• Who sat last inning?
• Who needs more game reps?
• Who is ready to try another position?
• Are substitutions planned ahead of time?
• Is every player getting meaningful opportunities to contribute?
• Are players being taught while they are on the field, not just placed somewhere?

A simple rotation plan can make a huge difference.

Fair does not always mean identical.
It means every player is intentionally included, coached, and given opportunities to grow.

The bench should be part of the rotation — not the same players’ permanent position.

Rotate with purpose. Teach every player. Develop the whole team.

Develop ballplayers, not just lineups.

⚾ ⚾🥎 CBSL Coach’s Corner: Know Your Position — Second Base

Second base is a movement position. A good second baseman is constantly reading the play, communicating, covering, backing up, and knowing where they need to be next.

A second baseman should be learning to:

• Field ground balls cleanly and know when to make the routine throw to first
• Cover second base when the shortstop is pulled away from the bag
• Know when the shortstop is covering instead
• Communicate on balls hit between first and second so the first baseman and second baseman know who is taking the ball and who is covering first
• Back up first base on certain throws and plays
• Move into position for cutoffs and relays from the outfield
• Know where to go when the ball is hit to right field, center field, or left field
• Be ready for force plays at second
• Understand basic double-play footwork as players get older
• Keep track of runners and know where the next play should be

On a ball hit to the right side, communication matters. If the first baseman leaves the bag to field the ball, the second baseman may need to cover first. If the second baseman fields it, the first baseman should be getting to the bag and giving a target.

On balls hit into the outfield, second base often becomes part of the cutoff or relay system. Players should be taught where to line up, who they are relaying to, and to listen for direction from teammates.

When there is a runner on first, second base and shortstop also need to communicate before the pitch about who is responsible for covering second on a steal or force play. That decision can depend on the hitter, the pitch, and where each infielder needs to move.

And just like every other position, when the ball is not hit to second base, the second baseman still has a job. They may be covering a base, backing up a throw, becoming a cutoff, or moving into position for the next play.

Second base is not just a spot on the field. It teaches players awareness, communication, footwork, and how all nine defenders work together.

Don’t just tell a player to “play second.” Teach them what second base is responsible for on every type of play.

Develop ballplayers, not just lineups.

⚾ CBSL Coach’s Corner: Develop the Whole Roster

One of the hardest parts of coaching youth sports is making sure every player is being developed — not just the players who are already confident, experienced, or comfortable in certain positions.

A strong coach is always asking:

• Am I teaching every player, or mainly correcting the same few?
• Am I giving different kids opportunities to learn new positions?
• Am I holding everyone to the same expectations?
• Am I noticing effort and improvement, not just natural ability?
• Am I helping players work through mistakes instead of deciding too early what they can or cannot do?

Youth players need repetition, instruction, and opportunities to grow. Some will progress faster than others, but every player should feel like there is a path for them to improve.

Try This at Practice: Position Rotation

During defensive work, rotate players through 2–3 positions instead of keeping everyone in their normal spot.

Give each player a few reps, coach the position, make corrections, and let them try again.

You may discover a player can handle more than you realized — and the player gets the confidence of knowing their coach is willing to teach them.

The goal isn’t equal playing time at every position. The goal is equal commitment to developing every player.
