GOLD CUP FINALS, GAME #10 - Jim Ferguson 1, Tom Perella 0 (10 minutes) - JIM FERGUSON of Carver, Minnesota wins the series, 6 games to 4, and is crowned the champion of the Gold Cup 250 Challenge Series. Ferguson finishes the tournament with a record of 46 wins and 34 losses. His teams were the Mets and Athletics.

FRANCISCO LINDOR, shortstop for Ferguson's Mets, was named Gold Cup Finals MVP. During the finals, Lindor hit .313, with a .476 on base percentage, a .500 slugging percentage, and an OPS of .976. And Lindor scored the only run in the final championship-clinching game.

Headed into Game #10, Ferguson said, "Hopefully Clay Holmes pitches a great game 10!," and Holmes did exactly that! As the starting pitcher for Ferguson's Mets, Holmes retired the first 10 batters he faced, and Tom Perella's Rangers did not get a hit until Evan Carter's leadoff single in the 6th. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the 1st. Leading off against Perella starter Tyler Mahle, Lindor singled, stole second, went to third on a ground out by Starling Marte, and scored on a ground out by Juan Soto. The run scored by Lindor proved to be the only run of the game. Holmes left the game after 6 innings; he allowed 1 hit and 2 walks, while striking out 6. Max Kranick took over for Holmes, holding Perella scoreless in the 7th.

In the top of the 8th, Perella thirdbaseman Josh Jung led off with a single, and that was all for Kranick, who was replaced by Edwin Diaz. Against Diaz, Carter drew a walk, and Josh Smith singled, and suddenly Perella was threatening with the bases loaded and nobody out. Next up was Wyatt Langford, and he hit a line drive right at Ferguson shortstop Lindor [dice roll of 3-12]. Lindor fired to thirdbaseman Mark Vientos, who stepped on the bag to double up Jung. And then Vientos fired the ball to second baseman Ronny Mauricio, who stepped on second to nail Carter, completing the triple play! In the top of the 9th, Diaz retired the side in order (Corey Seager, Adolis Garcia, and Kyle Higashioka) for the save. Holmes got the win, Mahle got the loss. Each team had just 4 hits.

As Gold Cup 250 Challenge Series champion, Ferguson wins $150.00 (runner-up Perella wins $60).

Excerpts from post-tournament statement by Gold Cup 250 Challenge Series champion Jim Ferguson:

"Many thanks for setting up and running this interesting event....

"I would like to name Francisco Lindor as MVP for my '2-team team.' :) In a low-offense series, he played exemplary shortstop (of course) and posted an OBP of .476 (10-for-21), stole 3 bases, and keyed the series saving triple play in Game 10. Special mention to Hogan Harris who saved 3 games, and to Sean Newcomb and Clay Holmes who both posted scoreless Starts in their single appearances. Tom Perella's clubs were worthy, tough opponents, and it took some good fortune to secure the championship from him.

"I would like to acknowledge my long-time Strat league, the Fly-by-Night Baseball Association https://flybynight-som.com/ where we are in the midst of MY 41st competitive season. We are still looking for our second Championship, the first coming way back in 1994. The general managers in the FBNBA have become almost family, and my sharp edge playing Strat has been honed by competing with them."

GOLD CUP FINALS, GAME #9 - Tom Perella 7, Jim Ferguson 5 (17 minutes) - With 2 out in the bottom of the 9th, Geraldo Perdomo's walkoff grand slam homer off Ferguson reliever Elvis Alvarado gave Tom Perella's Diamondbacks an amazing comeback victory. After a low-scoring game for the first 8 innings, the teams combined for 9 runs in the 9th inning. With 9 games played and 1 game remaining, Jim Ferguson leads the series 5 games to 4, and he can still clinch the Gold Cup 25 Challenge Series by winning Game #10. But if Perella wins Game #10, Perella and Ferguson will be tied at 5 games apiece - and an extra tiebreaker round will be needed. The starters for this game were Corbin Burnes for Perella's Diamondbacks and Jacob Lopez for Ferguson's Athletics. Ferguson got on the board first with a solo homer by Brent Rooker in the top of the 1st. Lopez held Perella scoreless until the bottom of the 4th when Lopez walked Corbin Carroll with the bases loaded to tie the game at 1-1. And with 1 out in the bottom of the 5th, Perella catcher Gabriel Moreno drew a walk. Next, Designated hitter James McCann doubled to right, and Moreno beat Rooker's throw to the plate to score from first and give Perella a 2-1 lead. That ended the day for Lopez; he was replaced by Mitch Spence. And the score remained 2-1 in favor of Perella until the 9th inning.

After 8 innings of work, Burnes had allowed just 1 run on 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out 9. Jake Woodford took the hill going for the save. Shea Langeliers led off, reaching base on an error by Perella thirdbaseman Blaze Alexander. Langeliers stole second, and then Austin Wynns slammed a 2-run homer to put Ferguson up 3-2. Next, Carlos Cortes doubled. Woodford then retired the next 2 batters, with Cortes remaining at second, but then Jacob Wilson hit a 2-run homer to give Ferguson a 5-2 edge. Kevin Ginkel took over for Perella in relief, getting Brett Harris to ground out.

In the bottom of the 9th, Hogan Harris took the hill for Ferguson, going for the save - which would also give Ferguson the Gold Cup championship. But Ketel Marte singled, and then went to second on a single by Blaze Alexander. Moreno was out on a flyball to right, but then McCann drew a walk to load the bases. Alvarado took over for Harris (and Jake McCarthy ran for McCann). Tim Tawa drew a walk, forcing in a run, and Ferguson's lead was now 5-3. Alek Thomas bounced back to the mound, and Harris threw home to force the runner. There were now 2 out, but the bases were still loaded, setting the stage for Perdomo's game-winning grand slam. Ginkel got the win, Harris got the loss, and the series goes to Game #10 tomorrow. Perella stranded 13 baserunners, going just 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position - but it was that 1 that made all the difference.

In tomorrow's Game #10, Ferguson will still be going for a championship-clinching win, while Perella will be trying to send the series to a tiebreaker round. Corbin Burnes will start for Perella's Diamondbacks and Jacob Lopez will start for Ferguson's Athletics. Clay Holmes will start for Ferguson's Mets, and Tyler Mahle will start for Perella's Rangers.
