GOLD CUP FINALS, GAME #10 - Jim Ferguson 1, Tom Perella 0 (10 minutes) - JIM FERGUSON of Carver, Minnesota wins the series, 6 games to 4, and is crowned the champion of the Gold Cup 250 Challenge Series. Ferguson finishes the tournament with a record of 46 wins and 34 losses. His teams were the Mets and Athletics.
FRANCISCO LINDOR, shortstop for Ferguson's Mets, was named Gold Cup Finals MVP. During the finals, Lindor hit .313, with a .476 on base percentage, a .500 slugging percentage, and an OPS of .976. And Lindor scored the only run in the final championship-clinching game.
Headed into Game #10, Ferguson said, "Hopefully Clay Holmes pitches a great game 10!," and Holmes did exactly that! As the starting pitcher for Ferguson's Mets, Holmes retired the first 10 batters he faced, and Tom Perella's Rangers did not get a hit until Evan Carter's leadoff single in the 6th. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the 1st. Leading off against Perella starter Tyler Mahle, Lindor singled, stole second, went to third on a ground out by Starling Marte, and scored on a ground out by Juan Soto. The run scored by Lindor proved to be the only run of the game. Holmes left the game after 6 innings; he allowed 1 hit and 2 walks, while striking out 6. Max Kranick took over for Holmes, holding Perella scoreless in the 7th.
In the top of the 8th, Perella thirdbaseman Josh Jung led off with a single, and that was all for Kranick, who was replaced by Edwin Diaz. Against Diaz, Carter drew a walk, and Josh Smith singled, and suddenly Perella was threatening with the bases loaded and nobody out. Next up was Wyatt Langford, and he hit a line drive right at Ferguson shortstop Lindor [dice roll of 3-12]. Lindor fired to thirdbaseman Mark Vientos, who stepped on the bag to double up Jung. And then Vientos fired the ball to second baseman Ronny Mauricio, who stepped on second to nail Carter, completing the triple play! In the top of the 9th, Diaz retired the side in order (Corey Seager, Adolis Garcia, and Kyle Higashioka) for the save. Holmes got the win, Mahle got the loss. Each team had just 4 hits.
As Gold Cup 250 Challenge Series champion, Ferguson wins $150.00 (runner-up Perella wins $60).
Excerpts from post-tournament statement by Gold Cup 250 Challenge Series champion Jim Ferguson:
"Many thanks for setting up and running this interesting event....
"I would like to name Francisco Lindor as MVP for my '2-team team.' :) In a low-offense series, he played exemplary shortstop (of course) and posted an OBP of .476 (10-for-21), stole 3 bases, and keyed the series saving triple play in Game 10. Special mention to Hogan Harris who saved 3 games, and to Sean Newcomb and Clay Holmes who both posted scoreless Starts in their single appearances. Tom Perella's clubs were worthy, tough opponents, and it took some good fortune to secure the championship from him.
"I would like to acknowledge my long-time Strat league, the Fly-by-Night Baseball Association https://flybynight-som.com/ where we are in the midst of MY 41st competitive season. We are still looking for our second Championship, the first coming way back in 1994. The general managers in the FBNBA have become almost family, and my sharp edge playing Strat has been honed by competing with them."
