Original 1933 Jo Mora “Evolution of the Cowboy” lithograph, made to promote the Salinas Rodeo in California.
If the woman at the top center looks familiar, it’s because The Byrds put her on the cover of Sweetheart of the Rodeo in 1968. This is where that image came from.
This is the first printing, identified by the Salinas map panel that was removed from every later edition. Mora packed the whole history of the American cowboy into one sheet, from Spanish conquistadors to 1930s rodeo riders, with every saddle, spur, and rope style labeled by hand.
