How Knowledge Takes Root

In the dojang, knowledge flows like water. But not all vessels are ready to receive it at once.

At Executive Martial Arts Nashville, teaching happens in layers, like the careful folding of mental steel. Each lesson builds upon the last, creating a structure of understanding that becomes increasingly refined with every repetition.

The triangle of obtaining, retaining, and demonstrating knowledge forms the foundation of all martial education. First, the student must grasp the technique in their mind. Like the circle giving birth to the triangle, and the triangle to the square, basic movements evolve into complex applications. Then comes retention, where techniques are practiced until they become part of the student's very nature. Finally, the student must show their mastery through consistent, reliable ex*****on.

Our instructors guide this process with patience, understanding that some concepts take root immediately while others require careful cultivation.

Mental Focus

In a world that never slows down, the ability to be fully present is one of the most powerful skills you can develop. Asian swordsmanship demands exactly that. Every draw, every cut, every form requires complete mental clarity. There is no room for distraction. Over time, that level of focus sharpens your mind in ways that carry far beyond the training floor, into your work, your relationships, and your daily life. This is what traditional swordsmanship builds in our students here in Nashville.

Two Phases, One Path

Operation Joan of Arc is structured around two distinct developmental phases, because different seasons of life demand different approaches to growth.

The Foundation Phase (Ages 13 to 16) builds the core. Young women train in hapkido and introductory sword techniques, developing self-defense skills, situational awareness, mental discipline, and the physical confidence that carries through a lifetime.

The Leadership Phase (Ages 20 to 27) goes deeper. Training evolves into advanced tactical thinking, live blade work, and the kind of leadership principles that shape how a woman carries herself in the world. With greater skill comes greater responsibility, and this phase takes both seriously.

The growth is real. The community is real. The results are undeniable.

Real-World Self-Defense That Actually Works

There is a significant difference between martial arts that look impressive and martial arts that work when it matters most.

At Executive Martial Arts Nashville, our Hapkido training is rooted in techniques that have been tested by military and law enforcement professionals in real, high-pressure situations. These are not theoretical concepts. They are battle-proven methods refined over generations and adapted so that anyone, regardless of age, size, or fitness level, can learn them safely and effectively.

Hapkido's emphasis on using an attacker's energy against them makes it ideal for women defending against larger opponents, older adults who cannot rely on strength alone, and anyone who wants practical self-defense skills without years of conditioning.

True self-defense also means developing awareness, learning to de-escalate, and building the kind of confidence that deters threats before they escalate.

The Teacher's Path

The relationship between teacher and student runs deeper than mere instruction.

At Executive Martial Arts Nashville, our instructors understand that each student represents a unique journey, a distinct flame that requires its own specific fuel to burn bright. As Christopher Garland puts it, "The teacher, the mentor, has a task: the primary objective is the pupils' education and ability to obtain, retain, and then demonstrate these skillsets."

Like the ancient swordsmen who forged their blades in fire and ice, our instructors shape the raw potential within each student through careful refinement and dedicated attention. There are no shortcuts and no easy paths to mastery. Just as the blade tells no lies, the progress of a student reveals the truth of the teaching.

This is what sets training at EMA apart. It is personal. It is intentional. And it is rooted in something far deeper than technique alone.

Cultural Enrichment

There is something rare about a practice that teaches you history while you train. Asian swordsmanship at Executive Martial Arts is exactly that. Every movement, every form, every technique carries centuries of tradition behind it. Students do not just learn how to handle a sword. They learn the philosophies, the historical figures, and the cultural contexts that shaped this ancient art. It is a journey of discovery that changes how you see the world. Come find out what that means for you.

The Mission

Operation Joan of Arc is now active at Executive Martial Arts in Nashville.

This is not a conventional women's empowerment program. It is a rigorous, structured path of martial training and leadership development built specifically for young women who are ready to become something more.

Just as Joan of Arc stood with extraordinary courage in the face of overwhelming odds, this program cultivates those same qualities through hapkido and classical swordsmanship. The goal is not just physical skill. It is the formation of warriors of body, mind, and spirit who carry the values of family, faith, and community into every room they walk into.

The future needs women who are not just capable but formidable. Operation Joan of Arc is where that transformation begins.

The Endorsement

When a retired US Army Special Forces Sergeant Major with nearly 40 years of martial arts experience personally endorses your training program, that says something words alone cannot.

SGM Thomas Buchino (Ret.) trained alongside our founder, Christopher Garland, for years while supporting the 5th Special Forces Group with combatives programs. His letter of recommendation calls Mr. Garland's instruction and mentorship "instrumental to the success of the Special Forces Regiment."

This is someone who has seen techniques tested in the most demanding environments imaginable. Someone who has trained across decades and holds Mr. Garland in the highest regard.

At Executive Martial Arts Nashville, the same caliber of instruction that earned the trust of America's elite warriors is available to you and your family. That is what sets us apart.
