Update on Logan’s Recovery, 9:45am Friday Aug 21: Logan is currently in his second surgery for his leg. This surgery is for his compartment syndrome, a side effect from his injuries.

His injuries are:
Shattered TiB and Fib.
Fractured shoulder
Lacerations and abrasions everywhere.
He had an initial surgery for his leg to reconstruct his bones.

Please continue to keep Logan and his teammates in your thoughts.

………..

Naples Velo is deeply saddened to learn about this tragic crash that resulted in 2 lives lost and 7 fighting for their lives in the hospital including our own member, Logan Whitcomb. Logan suffered a broken leg amongst other things and is recovering from surgery.

Here's something to think about, discuss with your people, share in hopes that it will change one person's behavior: We regularly see drivers stop patiently while a gaggle of geese crosses the road. We accept the inconvenience. We wait. We understand that their lives are worth slowing down for.

And yet, put a person on a bicycle in front of those same drivers and something changes. Patience becomes anger. Inconvenience becomes entitlement. People intimidate, threaten, pass dangerously close, or use a several-thousand-pound vehicle to make a point.

Why is this normal?

Unfortunately, this isn’t abstract to us as cyclists. We know what it feels like to have our lives treated as less important than someone else’s momentary inconvenience.

If we cannot change the way people think about cyclists—if we cannot restore some basic sense of responsibility and humanism on our roads—then when will the consequences finally reflect the magnitude of the harm?

No matter where you are, find and support your local advocacy group. They are the ones doing the ground work to fight for our rights. For us in Naples, thats Naples Pathways Coalition.

We are human beings and our lives are worth slowing down for...

Please keep the Whitcomb family in your prayers and stay safe out there. 🤍

Eleven young cyclists went out for a team ride this morning. Two will never make it home. Seven are in the hospital.

Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers, students and members of the Milligan University cycling team, were killed after a driver struck a group of eleven teammates riding together in Carter County, Tennessee. Nine cyclists were struck by the vehicle. NINE.

This tragedy hits painfully close to home, as Magnus knew riders on the Milligan cycling team, and his family is in touch with the parents of those students. They are part of the same close-knit cycling community that has now been shattered by another devastating loss.

Our hearts are with Haylan and Brayden’s families, their injured teammates and the entire Milligan community.

How many more lives have to be lost before we stop treating this as inevitable?

Good Morning from Leadville 😀.  Velo member, Ainsley came out to support Bob Campbell in his quest to be the fastest 70+ age group finisher of the Leadville 100 race, part of the Lifetime Race series. Bob smashed that goal. He finished the race under 8 hr, becoming the first person to ever accomplish that, winning his age group by over 2 hrs and making him also the first in his age group to earn a Leadville Big belt buckle!

Absolutely Awesome, Bob! We hope to see your belt at our next HH.

Let’s hear it for Bob, who won his age group at the Leadville 100! There’s nothing this guy can’t do. We’re so proud!
