Why do we incorporate games like jousting into riding lessons?
Because while riders are having fun, they’re also developing important riding skills—often without realizing how much they’re learning!

When a rider is focused on hitting a target, they have to guide their horse, maintain their balance, control their speed and coordinate their own movements—all at the same time.

And if they miss? They adjust and try again.
That’s where riding lessons become life lessons.

At 3 Gems Riding Academy, our goal isn't simply to develop better riders. We use horses to help develop confident, capable young people who can problem-solve, persevere through challenges and encourage others.

When Mother Nature doesn’t send the rain, we bring our own! 💧🚛 We’re using a water truck as an extra measure during this drought to prepare the arena, control dust, and create safer footing for horses and riders before the 3 Gems Saddle Club Show. 🐴

Horseback riding lessons: entertainment for the whole family! 🐴😂

For the student:

Trying to steer a 1,000-pound animal with opinions.

Learning that “walk on” sometimes means “stand here and think about it.”

Attempting to post the trot while keeping every body part under control.

Discovering muscles you didn’t know existed.

Feeling like a professional rider when the horse follows directions the first time.

Getting covered in horse hair, dirt and slobber—and loving every minute of it.

Realizing the horse remembers exactly where the treats are hidden.

Learning that the horse is often a better teacher than any human.

For the parent watching:

Holding your breath while pretending to remain calm.

Taking 147 photos—and keeping the three that aren’t blurry.

Watching your child repeatedly say “Whoa” while the horse calmly walks along.

Learning horse terminology you never expected to know.

Quietly calculating how much a horse, saddle, trailer and barn might cost.

Cheering like your child just won the Olympics because they trotted three steps.

Watching your child clean a stall without complaining—while their bedroom remains a disaster.

Realizing you came to watch one lesson and somehow became a full-time horse chauffeur.

The drought data is in, and we here at 3 Gems are officially 12 inches below average rainfall. Since a swimming pool is basically a mirage at this point, we’re pivoting to a "dust-free" riding arena.
It’s an elite setup: a complex network of pumps, strategically placed sprinklers, a lawn chair for doom-scrolling of 10 to 12 hours straight to ensure everything stays precisely damp. What we wont do for a perfect ride!
