Lake Norman Muay Thai Club is an organization is committed to offering quality martial arts training for people of all ages and skill levels.

We also take pride in servicing the local Parkinson’s Community with therapy classes. On a cold March morning in 2016, in a local park, Kru JT Smit set out with a goal of bringing authentic Muay Thai to the Lake Norman. Today, now located on Hwy 150, hundreds have trained at Lake Norman Muay Thai, and have enjoyed the rewards of participating in this wonderful martial art.

So proud of Christopher Morales. Began training him when he was five years old, and have watched him grow into an incredible fighter.

On Saturday, September 26th he will return to Toronto. Keep your eyes on Christopher Morales. He is a rising champion coming out of Lake Norman Muay Thai.

Congratulations Stamp Fairtex for your big win tonight!

This fight is widely regarded as a catalyst for what would become known as the “low-kick revolution,” a turning point that helped change how Western fighters viewed Muay Thai. Under restrictive rules and against an opponent accustomed to a different style of combat, the effectiveness of the low kick became impossible to ignore. Each strike demonstrated how a well-timed attack to the legs could disrupt an opponent’s balance, movement, stance, and ability to generate power.

The significance of the fight extended far beyond the result itself. It gave Western audiences and fighters a striking demonstration of how Muay Thai’s techniques could remain highly effective even when adapted to rules that limited many of the art’s traditional weapons. The low kick, in particular, emerged as a powerful tool for controlling distance and gradually compromising an opponent’s mobility rather than relying solely on head strikes or combinations.

Following this historic encounter, American kickboxers and early MMA fighters began studying Muay Thai with greater interest, incorporating its distinctive leg-kicking techniques into their own repertoires. Fighters started experimenting with different setups, angles, and combinations designed to make the low kick more difficult to anticipate. What had once been relatively unfamiliar to many Western competitors gradually became an essential part of modern striking.

Over time, the influence of Muay Thai leg kicks spread throughout kickboxing and MMA. The technique evolved from a specialized weapon into a fundamental component of striking strategy, used to weaken an opponent’s base, slow their movement, disrupt their rhythm, and create openings for punches and other attacks. In that sense, the fight represented more than a memorable contest—it helped accelerate a technical shift that would influence generations of Western fighters. 09/03/2026

Legendary fight. Much respect to Champion Rick Rufus who later began training Muay Thai.
