FUN INFO: Sound plays tricks on your brain underwater

Because water is much denser than air, sound travels about five times faster underwater. While that sounds like you should have super-hearing, it actually wreaks havoc on your directional awareness. Normally, your brain figures out where a sound is coming from by calculating the micro-fraction-of-a-second delay between which ear hears it first. Because sound moves so fast through water, that time gap virtually disappears—meaning sound hits both of your ears at almost the exact same time.

Great article as lately we have seen a ton of negative news. DSMB saves a divers life! Why any time diving on open water I recommend all divers to have a DSMB not just relying on the Dive Masters.

Update on LKN Quarry.
Dove it yesterday late afternoon. Surface temp was 89 and at 37 was 68.
Vis was about 8 feet.

Update on lake norman quarry temps. Surface was at 78 and at 45 feet it was 68.

A topic came up the other day about ear care and what people do or use, especially when diving back to back days. Nothing can ruin a trip faster! Here are a few tips:

1. I personally use a pair of ventilated ear plugs called SurfEar Pros. Ventilated is a must here to allow for ear equalization! There are others out there like Doc ProPlugs. The reason I like SurfEars over Docs is how they fit in your ears with multiple things to hold them in. They have never fallen out on their own, also has a better leash, so you don’t lose one.

2. Ear shield sprays - I have used these and have mixed reviews for my ears. You apply these in each ear before diving to create a barrier that water doesn’t pass to the eardrum. Ear shield is a popular brand.

3. 50/50 treatment after a dive. Getting the outer ear dry helps prevent ear infections. The 50/50 is a 50% mix of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar. Putting a few drops in each ear after your final dive day. Now the alcohol may not feel pleasant in some folks' ears, and at times I also use Natural Ear ear drops. These use oils instead of alcohol.

4. Equalize early and often and stay hydrated! Hydration helps thin mucus, allowing for smoother equalization.

There are other techniques, such as using a hair dryer after diving, and avoiding certain foods before diving to help equalization.

X and I dove last night at Lake Norman Quarry . Since the Treasure hunt will be there this Saturday 6-13-2026 I'll do a QUARRY dive report. We went in the front deep entry. Dropped off to the area between the deep wall and the Cruiser. The viz is almost non existent. It is very cloudy from the surface down to the bottom at 96 feet. On the bottom near the cruiser you can barely see your dive buddy. We went across the bottom toward the back side passing the "pulley on the rock". I about head butted the rock. Then we went to find the "bath tub". My high powered dive light could barely see the bottom a foot away. We went to the big school bus. The viz there maybe a max of 5 feet. We swam to the "statue garden". Only a few feet of viz there. We then went to the "Big sailboat". The viz there was only about 5 feet. Then we swam around the quarry wall and up to the training area. I was 3 feet off the wall and barley could see it. The training area wasn't any better. We were looking for a lost weight pouch under the floating training platform and could only see the bottom from about 1 foot distance. Bottom line is the viz sucks. Bare in mind that it was 8:30 or 9:00 pm and there was no ambient light, but with our lights we can usually see a good distance. The water temp is better news. Were were seeing temps on the bottom of 62-63 degrees. Temps at about 30 to 40 feet were between 64 to 66 degrees. We were both in drysuits with medium undergraments and were totally comfortable on a 105 min dive. Come on out for the treasure hunt, but be prepared for not-so-good Viz. See yall Saturday.

Lake Norman Quarry surface temp is 72 and temp at 38 feet was 67. Getting warmer!!! Should be great next weekend for the treasure hunt.
