Before they arrived, there was just the grove.
And then, slowly, we made a place for rest.
Blankets. Bolsters. Crystal bowls. A circle beneath the redwoods. A little handwritten sign pointing the way.
I had spent months imagining the first Rest Is Sacred, but there was no way to know what would happen once six women actually stepped into the space.
We listened. We rested. We spent time with the trees. We received sound. We talked.
And talked.
Our gathering ended—and still, no one left.
Nearly an hour later, we were still sitting together beneath the redwoods, sharing stories, asking questions, laughing, learning from one another.
I went into the day hoping to create a place where Black women could put some things down for a little while.
What emerged was something I couldn't have arranged on a yoga mat:
connection.
The first Rest Is Sacred is complete.
I’m still listening to what it taught me. 🌲
With deep gratitude to and the San Mateo County African American Community Initiative for helping make this gathering possible.
Rest is sacred. Softness is strength. Your body is home.
