Bill Guerin talking about Kirill Kaprizov here should resonate with a lot of young players.

Kaprizov is one of the most skilled players in the world.

But Guerin’s message?

He’s a power forward first.

The skill comes after that.

And so does the reminder that none of it works without the work.

There’s a lesson in there, especially for talented young players trying to move up.

Being “skilled” isn’t enough.

Do you work?

Do you hunt pucks?

Do you win battles?

Can you play through contact?

Can you get inside?

Can you impose yourself on the game when there’s no time and space?

Can you impact a game when the pretty plays aren’t there?

Too many young players want their identity to be “skilled.”

Skill is a weapon. It’s not an identity.

Figure out what kind of player you are. Build your game around the things that translate when the game gets harder, faster and more physical.

Then WORK at being that player every single night.

Let your skill amplify everything else.

Not replace it.

HLINKA GRETZKY CUP - TEAM USA

Congrats to goaltender Brandon Wright on being selected to the USA Hockey roster for the Hlinka Gretzky Cup! Brandon played last season for the NorthStar Knights 16U AAA and is signed with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL!

Good luck in Edmonton, Brandon!
