Recovery Bike Shop

Thanks to an amendment by Council Members Elliott Payne and Michael Rainville, the Central Ave Art Walk got a much needed vote of confidence Thursday as the Central Ave reconstruction project goes back to MNDoT.

Payne Elliott Payne and Rainville Michael Rainville for Ward 3 (and their amazing staff), who have both been very supportive of the Art Walk, made sure MNDoT would understand that the lines on the street matter a great deal to the people of Northeast Minneapolis. Their amendment calls for “MNDoT to acknowledge that this part of Central Avenue is not a highway but a dense urban arts district.” The amendment speaks to the Art Walk specifically and calls for the inclusion of input from the Arts District and the greater community. This is a big step. This is a win.

Thank you to everyone who has sent emails or made phone calls or showed up for Coffee (Outside) to advocate for the Central Ave Art Walk over the last two years. The work has a long way to go, but we have been working to get to this exact point for a long time. And we are being heard! This is a real win for the Arts District, for our neighbors, and for Minneapolis.

Get on the bike bus, our annual group ride to the MN State Fair. Ride departs Recovery Bike Shop at 10:20am. Meet us at the bike shop or anywhere along the published route and join us when we pass by.

The important thing is that parking a car at the Fair sucks and group rides are awesome. Everyone welcome. All of our rides are no-drop and party pace, especially when we’re going to a party like the State Fair.

President Jackson (not pictured) was a racist, a misogynist, and a profiteer. I can only think of one president worse than this guy. He signed orders targeting ethnic populations and adopted policies of ethnic cleansing. He attacked the Federal bank, calling it bad for America and worked to undermine its authority. When he lost an election, he claimed that the system was rigged.

He was a demagogue who ignored the law when it suited him.

So Jackson Square Park is in the process of being renamed. Join us 10am Sunday at Coffee (Outside) for a renaming discussion (including Park Commissioner Dan Engelhart Dan Engelhart ), Title IX construction updates, and treats!

And don’t forget about yoga with Rachel Croft at Recovery Bike Shop at 9am Sunday. It’s free!

And the NE Community Ride leaves the Park this Sunday at about 11am. Everyone welcome!

ELLI loves wide tire single speeds. They’re really capable, low maintenance city bikes. They’re good anywhere in town.

You should also know that Elli levels up Recovery Bike Shop. I always look forward to greeting them. Elli is thoughtful in answering the “How you doin?” question and asks back with a sincerity that makes me really think about how I’m doing. It’s just nicer to be in the shop when Elli is here.

It was a heck of a ride last week. Three flat tires, one bloody knee, and a scraped elbow. Lots of starts and stops.

But we did get this awesome photo!

And it was pretty much all fine. Actually it was kind of lovely. It’s a no drop ride. So when there is a flat, we all pulled over, check to see if there is any way we can help, then back to the conversation to wait for things to get back on track.

We got back to Sociable a little later than usual last week, but the cider was still cold, the people were still great.

Thanks for your patience, everyone. But mostly, thanks for a great evening. These long summer days with all of you are really the best. See you tonight!

It’s our annual group ride to the Fair! And the worst parking event of the year! Yay!

Really, riding is the only way to get to the Fair. Join the group. We’ll get you there on a preplanned route with a regular schedule. Meet at Recovery Bike Shop around 10am or join anywhere along the map. We’ll pick you up as we pass by!

Ride starts at Recovery Bike Shop and heads out at 10:20am. We’ll park our bikes at the Buford Ave bike corral. (Then follow us to the fine arts building where TWO of our friends have been selected to display their work! Congratulations Nick and Barbara )

Rethos is hosting the John Cook House team tonight for a panel discussion at Malcolm Yards (6:30pm) to answer the question, how is the John Cook House project succeeding even before construction?

We’ll talk about getting this far, next steps, our fears, and how to be a part of the project.

It’s true. The confluence of our 1,000th rider of the year and our 200th Coffee (Outside) of all time has occurred at the same time. And this is the crew that made it happen.

We focus a lot on the community outside of the bike shop. But let me brag about the people inside the shop for a minute. This is the first time Recovery Bike Shop has sold 1,000 bikes on its own. This is the first time a Reco crew has built 1,000 bikes in 12 months.

They did it by working together. These people look out for each other. They pick up the slack when someone is sick. They come up front to help each other when it’s busy. They ask questions and give answers without judgement. They quality check each other’s bikes and make each other smarter along the way.

This crew is made of some of the best people I know.

In 21 years I’ve never been more proud of what we do. I’ve never enjoyed this job more. I’ve never liked being at the shop as much as I do now. This place, this old bike shop, these people, they set a good example. They make this a healthy place to be.

Thank you to everyone that supported us this year. Thank you to everyone that rides in Minneapolis.

In honor of this milestone, we will be celebrating Coffee (Outside) at Recovery Bike Shop Sunday at 10am.
