Never Forget

Each year on September 11, our LIUNA community reflects on the days and weeks and months that followed the tragic events of 2001. We all recall our location or have heard stories about our families location, when the world irrevocably changed, but for those of us in the LIUNA Network, the subsequent days are profoundly connected to the remarkable individuals we had the honor to support.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, our West Virginia Appalachian Laborers Training Center, along with many others in the LIUNA Training Network, rose to the occasion to fulfill our mission: to train and prepare workers for the monumental challenges ahead. We dedicated ourselves to training the courageous men and women who went directly to Ground Zero and the Pentagon for the rescue, recovery, and cleanup operations. It was an overwhelming and sorrowful period, yet witnessing the resilience, commitment, and extraordinary bravery of those workers is a memory that our organization will cherish forever. They put their own health and safety on the line to restore closure, healing, and hope to a mourning nation.

Today, we pay tribute to the 2,977 innocent lives lost on that fateful day. Additionally, we would like to take a moment to acknowledge and express gratitude to the rescue and recovery teams—particularly those who came through our doors or whom we had the honor to train with our Mobile Units. Your courage shone brightly during our nation’s darkest hour. We will always remember your sacrifice and the ongoing health challenges that many of you continue to face today.

Labor Day should remind of of the sacrifices and hardships our predecessors faced to win the rights we enjoy today. We would encourage the membership to sign ip for RISE Training to learn about these benefits we enjoy as a result of the labor movement and to "Train Up" on the knowledge & skills that will shape the future of our trade.

The West Virginia Laborers Training Center is currently accepting resumes for multiple Instructor positions. If you are a current LIUNA member with at least 5 years of experience as a Construction Craft Laborer and a strong desire to join a growing team while helping to shape the future of the trade, we encourage you to reach out. It was a great honor to host LiUNA General President Brent Booker, LiUNA VP & Mid-Atlantic Regional Manager Phil Ameris, and LiUNA Construction Department Director & Assistant Regional Manager Brendan O’Sullivan for a site tour and discussions on how training is being used to create opportunities for the membership through pro-active partnerships and forward thinking initiatives.
Also during this visit our leadership was eager to engage with the 14 new apprentices on site and took the opportunity to eat lunch with these new members. It gave us great pride to watch our leadership interact with LiUNA’s newest members as these individuals take their first steps into careers within LiUNA.
