I’ve been in business long enough to know: IT AIN’T EASY.

There were years of learning, mistakes, rejection, setbacks, sacrifices, and moments when I questioned whether I was going to make it.

And that’s the part social media doesn’t always show you.

So before you compare your beginning to somebody else’s highlight reel, remember:

You don’t know the whole story behind what you’re seeing.

Don’t let someone else’s carefully created image convince you that you’re failing because your journey isn’t happening fast enough.

Build the business.
Learn the skills.
Make the mistakes.
Stay consistent.
Play the LONG game.

Because real success doesn’t always happen overnight.

Sometimes it takes years of work before it looks like it happened overnight.

It was an emotional rollercoaster. 🎢

There were days with no money.
Negative bank accounts.
Late payments.
Eviction notices.
Moments when I genuinely thought I was going to be homeless.
I experienced a panic attack.
I faced betrayal, disrespect, and people who didn’t believe in me.
I got denied for funding.
And there were moments when I questioned whether I was really going to make it.

But I kept moving.

Not because it was easy.
Not because I always had the money.
Not because everyone supported me.

I kept moving because I knew the vision God gave me.

And honestly? I had no Plan B.

So I had to keep building, keep learning, keep pivoting, keep believing, and keep showing up.

Today, I’m celebrating 5 YEARS in business. 🥂

Not because the journey has been perfect… but because I’m still here.

Still building.
Still serving.
Still growing.
Still striving for the best.

And this is only the beginning.

One of the biggest mistakes small business owners make is getting the money before they have a plan for the money.

I learned this lesson myself. I invested in inventory without first confirming the demand. The result? I didn’t lose everything—but I barely broke even. 😩

Funding is NOT the strategy.
Funding should fuel the strategy you already have.

Without a plan, it’s easy to:
🚨 Spend on emergencies
🚨 Make impulse purchases
🚨 Buy inventory you don’t need
🚨 Mismanage your cash flow
🚨 Run out of capital before the real opportunity comes

Before you apply for funding, ask yourself:

“If I get this money tomorrow, exactly how will I use it to grow my business?”

Don’t wait until the money hits your account to figure that out.

Plan first. Fund second. Execute with intention.

Understanding this distinction is critical when it comes to governance, decision-making, accountability, and ultimately positioning your nonprofit for funding.

💡 Founder ≠ Owner.

If you’re building a nonprofit, make sure you understand the rules BEFORE you start treating it like a traditional business.

If you want your nonprofit to be positioned to receive grants and other funding, simply registering your organization is not enough.

Your foundation needs to be properly structured, including things like:

✅ Proper nonprofit registration
✅ Bylaws
✅ Conflict of Interest Policy
✅ 501(c)(3) status
✅ And other key documents that demonstrate your organization is legitimate and properly governed

Funders want to see that your organization has the structure, accountability, and documentation to responsibly manage funding.
