With hunting seasons right around the corner, here’s some food for thought.

A few extra photos can make a huge difference in the final mount.

Your taxidermist wasn’t there when the animal was harvested. Reference photos help preserve the details that made that animal unique—scars, markings, coloration, antler character, and other imperfections that tell its story.

If you’re planning a shoulder mount, pedestal mount, or full-body mount, take photos from every angle and don’t forget close-ups of any unique features.

The better the reference photos, the better the final mount.

Every hunter and fisherman knows there are rules… and then there are the unwritten rules.

• Don’t crowd someone’s spot.
• Don’t ask about someone’s spot.
• Don’t burn locations.
• Respect first come, first served.
• Give credit where it’s due.
• Don’t expect someone to hand over the results of years of scouting, trial and error, and hard work.

If someone put in the miles, the early mornings, the fuel, the scouting, and the time to figure it out, don’t be mad when they keep that information close. Put in the work and earn your own spots too.

The outdoors is big enough for all of us. Respect the land, respect the game, and most importantly, respect each other.
