Today, as America celebrates its 250th anniversary, I celebrate not only the nation I call home, but also the journey that brought me here.

I am a proud naturalized citizen of the United States.

Fifty years ago, when America celebrated its Bicentennial, I was here as a young child with my family while my father, a Peruvian Army officer, attended Armor School at Fort Knox at the invitation of the United States Army. I could never have imagined that one day this country would become my home.

More than thirty years ago, I returned to build a life here. America gave me opportunities I never take for granted: an education, a profession I love, and the privilege of serving thousands of children, families, and adults from every background imaginable.

Although every person I have worked with has had a unique story, they have all shared something fundamental: the pursuit of freedom, the pursuit of opportunity, and the pursuit of happiness.

That is what America has always represented to me.

America is great because it is a nation of immigrants, innovators, dreamers, workers, servants, and families who, generation after generation, continue building something greater than themselves. Our diversity has never been a weakness. It is one of our greatest strengths. Our resilience is part of our identity.

This country has given me an identity that I carry with immense pride. It has allowed me to serve others, raise my voice for those who need one, and dedicate my career to helping people overcome adversity and build brighter futures.

As a psychologist, as an immigrant, and as an American, I will continue standing alongside the children, families, and communities I serve, defending the values that make this nation extraordinary: freedom, opportunity, dignity, compassion, and justice for all.

Because freedom is strongest when it belongs to everyone.
