Some moments are bigger than football.

Before Saturday’s game at Osborne Family Field, Gilmour Academy took the field carrying a green flag bearing a shamrock and three letters: JCG.

Gilmour senior Bruno Cook then walked across the field and presented the flag to Lake Catholic head coach Marty Gibbons in memory of his father, legendary Cougar head coach John Gibbons, who passed away in April.

For the Gibbons family, it was an unexpected and emotional moment.

“We recognize how competitive football can be, but it’s a giant community and Gilmour is a great representative of that,” Marty said. “Catholic schools differentiate themselves with gestures like this.”

Today, Marty was joined out on the field by John’s son-in-law, Matt Moran, and grandchildren Brady and Maggie Moran and Claire and Maddie Gibbons—all current Lake Catholic students—to share the flag and the story behind it.

To Gilmour Academy, its football program and Bruno: thank you. You gave the Gibbons family, and the Lake Catholic community, a moment we won’t soon forget.
