The Sunday after Labor Day is Grandparents Day. Yes, we have a whole day dedicated to grandparents. Grandparents and children have a special connection that makes grandparents live longer, and makes children more emotionally resilient. Grandparents Day is an opportunity to treasure that connection and spend some quality family time together -- in person, on the phone or by any means technology makes possible.

Patriot Day on September 11, 2026, marks the 25th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Patriot Day is dedicated to the memory of the people killed in the September 11 attacks of the year 2001. During the September 11 attacks, 2,977 people were killed, and more than 6,000 others were injured. The attacks remain the deadliest terrorist act in recorded history.

On Patriot Day, the flag of the United States is flown at half-staff at the White House and on all U.S. government buildings and establishments throughout the world; Americans are also encouraged to display flags in and outside their homes. Additionally, a moment of silence is observed to correspond with the attacks, beginning at 8:46 a.m. (Eastern Daylight Time), the time the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

This month, IRCC shines the Employee Spotlight on Michael Komat! Everyone at IRCC appreciates Michael’s work and now you'll know why, too! For three years, he’s been confidently behind the scenes in the kitchen, helping prepare the delicious daily soups, specials, and seafood for the enjoyment of AEC patrons. Working under the tutelage of Chef Frank, Michael works to get lunch orders ready, too. The Baltimore native recently shared that he really enjoys working at IRCC, and that the Military Balls are especially fun!

Michael has been married for 25 years, with an adult son and a daughter finishing high school. The avid sports enthusiast enjoys surf fishing and watching basketball and mixed martial arts as well as college football and wrestling.

Congratulations, Michael!

Happy Labor Day! This annual American holiday pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is observed each year on the first Monday of September. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day weekend also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans and is celebrated with cookouts and gatherings.

We take modern working conditions for granted today, but for a 2-minute history lesson about what's been accomplished in the last couple of centuries, check out this video. https://www.history.com/articles/labor-day

BUNCO! Indian River Colony Club has multiple groups that enjoy the fast-paced dice game that relies purely on luck! Players constantly rotate tables, creating a "speed socializing" environment. Each player pays a small entry fee (typically a few dollars) at the start of the game to build the cash prizes. Another reason to love it? Some say bunco parties are 10% game and 90% snacks!

Losers have fun, too.
In Bunco, players hold up the "L" hand gesture as a playful, self-deprecating joke to show they lost the round.

Victory over Japan Day marks the day on which Imperial Japan formally surrendered in World War II, bringing the war to an end on September 2, 1945.The official surrender document was signed aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. The name, V-J Day, was selected by the Allies after they named V-E Day for the victory in Europe.

After the official surrender, the United States began the process of helping to bring Japan back into the international community by strengthening military, political and economic ties, much as it was doing with former foes Italy and Germany. As an important ally, Japan increasingly has participated with the United States and other partners in a number of bilateral and multilateral military exercises and operations, especially since the fall of the Soviet Union. The Japanese government provides nearly $2 billion per year to offset the cost of stationing the 55,000 U.S. forces in 85 facilities across Japan.
